Now I have no post, oh the irony.

It's unlikely you could glue it back on anyway. A bolt's the way to go, dep. on how wide the pocket is you may get away with a round-head (carriage-type) or even the DGX one @Centrals posted, instead of a countersunk one.
 
The glue comment was tongue in cheek. I'll attempt the bolt solution. Thanks for your help everyone.
Trash can is the best solution. I assume the cord inside the spring reached its limit putting more stress on the post than it can handle.
 
I actually think it was my putting Tusa buckles on them, the diameter of opening hole was fractionally smaller than post so believer it "ate" into post.
