My recommendation would be to buy an aluminum backplate if you don't need weight, and a steel one for the times you're wearing your 7mil. A backplate is, in my opinion, the most versatile and long lasting platform to support your diving configuration, even if that includes an unforeseen move to a rebreather.

I've never found a STA to be necessary when using a backplate and single tank. Many people want to tighten the cam band(s) on the tank down as hard as they can, which is unnecessary and can lead to the tank being crooked. The reality is the tank just needs to be secure enough not to slide down.
