I bought an A.B. Biller shaft holder HS-20 for my 48" Padauk. The paperwork that came with it said

"Caution with new red lever type safety, the installment picture is reversed".

I have a red safety on my gun and since the installment involves drilling I was wondering if anyone has done this and can offer their experience? I think it just reverses the side the shaft goes on therefore you have to reverse the mounts.

My second question is, even if I install the pieces as low on the gun as possible they appear to be in the way of the bands (when stretched) a small amount.

It also looks like I am going to have to file down the shaft holder at the far end as it has sharp edges and may cut the bands.

any help appreciated

Thanks

I know you just bought the HS-20, but I have never liked that system. The thumb screw is always getting lost, and drilling a thru-hole into your gun is going to let water attack the wood (but Padauk wood is very good).

Personally I like Chad Carney's light and spare shaft system or the Spearfishing specialties Delrin tube holder.

99% of the time that I'm grabbing my spare shaft, is to put a 2nd shaft into big fish that has gotten away and he needs a bit more persuassion to slow him down. In that case you want to grip and rip that 2nd shaft out of the holder and load it instantly to chase down that fish. Messing with thumb screws(possible dropping it) just takes to much time when you have a fish fighting to get away from you.

I thought the same thing about loosing the thumb screw. I was going to try and ping the threads to try and limit how far the screw could back out but getting something in there to do punch the threads was difficult.

You may have convinced me to abandon the HS-20 pieces, When I first saw it I thought that with such few pieces and a low profile it would be less massive than others, but in the end I cannot find a comfortable spot to drill or a workable angle to mount everything so that the extra shaft and hardware isn't in the way of stretched bands.

Thanks for the help
