This may have been posted before, but I was curious what everybody here thought. I have a 95cu. ft. steel LP tank about 8-9 years old, current V.I.P. and hydro, interior like new.
My LDS says that I can probably put 3000-3500psi in it with no adverse effects. I have noticed that the burst disc on the original valve has 4000psi on it.
I've heard some divers say that this common, but not recommended by the tank mfg.

Thanks and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

This is the norm in "cave country". Some people will agree, some will disagree, but there has never been an LP steel tank failure due to overfilling. So yes, you're good to go with 3500ish.

Thanks, I just didn't want to wind up like the shark in "JAWS".

watch mythbusters.

I have heard that steel tanks split when they fail as opposed to aluminums creating shrapnel when they do. Either way, I wouldn't want to be around when it happened.

Anyone know this to be a fact?

We routinely fill lp tanks to 3500 psi for Erie wreck diving. I have three sets of doubles- lp72's, lp85's and lp 95's. All have seen 3000-3500 routinely with no adverse affects. BTW the 72's are from 70 and 71 and just recently passed hydro again last year. Any shop familiar with tech or tech friendly should not have an issue with giving you "good" fills. If you're new you might need to establish a relationship with them. Luckily two of the three shops I work with allow me to fill my own. The third fills for me but always at what I want not what somebody else says they should be filled to. Sometimes I go with 2500-2800 if I'm not expecting to need the extra gas but being able to do 4-5 ow checkouts in the 72's with students and not have to switch tanks is nice.
