Everyone has always been so helpful in our journeys, we finally write a trip report - Chicago to Roatan, August 2009:

TACA - all flights on time except the last-San Pedro Sula to Roatan flight, 5 hour delay. I'd advise anyone flying the ORD-Guatemala-San Salvador-San Pedro-Roatan route to ask about departure flights often when you get to the San Pedro airport. Once our flight was delayed, we almost missed the new flight due to lack of announcements in English that we could understand. Our fault -we have to brush up on our Spanish!
Return flights were all on time and we actually enjoyed visiting the San Salvador and Guatemala City airports.
Many may prefer the more direct routes from the US

Infinity Bay - I'd give them 5 stars out of 5. We rented from a private owner thru VRBO. Our particular unit was sparse as far as dishes, glasses, basic spices, pots and pans, etc. are concerned. We met some other owners during our stay and they have upgraded the amenities in their units; will stay with them in the future. We had 3 people in a one bedroom/one bath unit which was a little small, fine for a couple, we’ll do a 2 bdrm next time. The bar and restaurant at Infinity were great. Excellent bartenders and servers, with reasonable prices. Hit these folks up for tips on diving and fishing, etc., they know the reputable locals. Seafood pasta at Infinity was great, tasty chix wings and a good breakfast.

Diving - we haven't been diving in a while so we took our time in talking with various dive shops. After talking with Ocean Connections they were the right place for us. Silvio and Rowan were just terrific and went above and beyond for us. We had an awesome refresher shore dive with Rowan, he pointed out shrimps, lobsters, etc. On the boat dive eels and turtles were spotted. I just can’t say enough good things about these guys.

Snorkeling - was outstanding just to the left of Infinity Bay. Buoys mark the spots. Saw the biggest parrotfish I’ve ever seen. They were huge. Saw a ray, huge lobster, xmas tree worms, shrimps, etc…. just a wonderland!

Cruise ships - we were really only affected by a ship on Wednesday. The area gets crowded but you get a chance to educate the cruisers about the island.

Dining/Drinking – West End – Eagle Ray’s was a nice spot, but food was average at best, we enjoyed the Argentinian place twice, good value, food was above average. Pizza at Shark Dive was unusual, but great and you could make your slice your own with all the different toppings.Loved Sundowners for cocktails, very reasonable.
West Bay –see above regarding Infinity. Celeste’s Baleadas were yummy and her parrots are entertaining, Cool Beans has great sandwiches, Foster’s was good as well. Bite on the Beach has great apps, cool t-shirts and very friendly advice about the Island in general (we didn’t get a chance to have dinner ), Bananarama has the best bar entertainment on West Bay and Tim has our vote for best bartender along with Carlos at Infinity.

Rental Car -We rented through Hertz and our service person at the airport was the best. Driving around was a little hairy ( we did come to a screaming halt so a horse could cross the road in Flowers Bay), but we thought our rate, around $188/week was worth it. We toured the Island, shopped for groceries and were able to stop at spots we saw along the way. (we found The New York bakery for a great breakfast in French Harbor and The View was a great place to stop for lunch or a cocktail ). A driver or taxi may be fine for those who are uncomfortable driving crazy, hilly roads with equally crazy local drivers.

Roatan is one of the nicer Islands that we’ve been to. We still have a lot we’d like to see and explore in Roatan and we’ll be definitely visit again.

Hi there, nice & informative trip report!

Will be in West Bay for 2 weeks in April. Like you, we're used to renting small car and driving most islands ourselves. Was online researching rates and your rate is better than any we've found.

* How did you secure rental - in advance from home OR once you arrived?
* How is insurance included - in $188 rate? or ??
* What size vehicle did you get for that price? with AC?
* Did you get/do they have diesel? automatic?
* Did you/can you pick-up car at airport? Comments?

We plan to eat most dinners out and late (8-9pm) and saw pics with many cars 'tightly' parked in West End streets...

* How is parking in West End area?
* What are your tips? thoughts? comments?

Thanks for all your help with this. Much appreciated.

Like you, we're used to renting small car and driving most islands ourselves.

Driving a vehicle from West Bay to the main "touristy area" of Roatan, the West End, is likely a bit of overkill. There are water taxis available that make a lot more sense. As for driving around the remainder of the island, re-read this:

Driving around was a little hairy ( we did come to a screaming halt so a horse could cross the road in Flowers Bay). ....A driver or taxi may be fine for those who are uncomfortable driving crazy, hilly roads with equally crazy local drivers.

Other than West End, there really isn't a whole lot going on to see on Roatan... certainly nothing you wouldn't be better off hiring a driver for the day (cheaper than a cab, anyway). A visit to Coxen Hole (with some limited shopping); a stop at Mahogany Bay (Cruise Ship tourist-trap shops); The View (good food, but a real hike from West End). Sight seeing? Hire the driver.

Why? It's all about safety. The roads are slightly below the "sucks big time" category. They can look pretty simple on a sunny day, but how about adding a frequent rainstorm, muddy pavement, micro-traffic tie ups, night time with no reflectors or street lights, and bad road surfaces... unannounced.

The assumed liability of the driver is absolute, and even more heavily applied to non-locals. Most rental agencies have the vehicle paperwork in order, but again you, the driver, are responsible when you have to stop at a "Transito Inspection" where the cops ask for the vehicle papers. You will be detained until it gets straightened out- again, unlikely but legal. If an uninvited hitch-hiker jumps into your pick-up bed or back seat (and this is a commonly accepted norm amongst locals which is unknown, frightening and foreign to visitors), again, you the driver are absolutely liable (a legal term) for their lifetime care if they get injured in any way.

It is absolutely amazing how many people claim ownership of a chicken or stray island street dog that you just ran over, claiming a value of between $50 and $100. You will pay for it if you do, believe me.

Like so many other facets of life, there will be 100 people here that will jump in and tell you not to worry about it. It's your call. It really has never been worth it to me when I was vacationing there to drive myself. Hire an English speaking driver. Drink beers. Have a great day being shown around.

For what little reason there is to even leave West End/West Bay, this makes the most economic sense. Many people are spurred to rent a car so they can explore the island... maybe wait until the returning second vacation visit after you have first tried the "hired driver" route. I will wager that the urge to drive yourself will pass- there really and honestly aint that much to do or see on Roatan... yet.

Did I mention that I thought you would do well to hire an English speaking driver for the day?

We booked our car in advance and picked it up at the airport. Insurance was not included in our $188 rate. Our car was a automatic as I recall and about the size of a Toyota Corolla with A/C. Not sure what brand of car it was. We never had a problem parking in the West End.
I think renting a car is just an individual choice based on local risk and your comfort level. Probably not for everyone and RoatanMan's suggestion of trying a rental on your second visit is good advice.
Enjoy your trip.

Home and on holiday we are late dinner eaters (8P-9P) and for those advising to take water taxi to West End for dinner and land taxi back after - we realize water taxi will save us some $'s BUT

* What evening time does water taxi stop running between West Bay to West End? (in April)
