There are several annual mako tournaments off Nantucket and the Massachusetts coast. I believe that the sharks caught at those events are all donated to the local food banks.

Just curious... what do you think they did with it Wreckwriter?
 
Old thread, but I've been in 3 of the Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournaments. They indeed donate some of the catches to local food pantries. Unfortunately, there's no market for blues, and they're a lot more commnly caught than mako.

I also believe that about 6 years ago, the winning fish was an 830-odd pound Mako.
 
Did a little more digging on the Monster Shark tournament. Looks like the record for biggest mako in the 2001 tournament was 1,221 lbs. Possibly a world record. All the sharks meat went to the Greater Boston Food Bank.
