We were called out to a shop fire in the middle of the night (of course) and I just happened to be on duty at the nearest station (of course) and so we were the first arriving engine.

The single story metal covered structure was already fully involved and so we just took a defensive position. My partner and I were on a 2.5" line and were directing our flow through a window that we had broken out on the east side of the building.

After the fire was out and the overhaul began we found that several vehicles were in the bays furthest from *our* window... and they, along with a lot of other shop items (and who knows what kinds of chemicals) had been consumed. The building had a considerable fire load.

We also discovered the east bay was occupied by the remains of shop machinery and standing right in the middle of the bay was an oxycetelene cart... unconsumed but definitely worse for the wear.

I can only surmise that our fortuitous fog pattern had cool the unseen bomb that was only feet from our position... and an equally happy fact was that we had not used a straight stream...
