Thanks Big James. I'm going to try to get an argon set-up next fall/winter. I dive with some guys that have argon and they all love it (less cloths, less weight, more warmth).
JW... as long as you are not diving mixed gas you can get almost all the benefits of argon without an argon suit inflation system by pre-purging your drysuit with argon before the dive. To get the benefit of argon suit inflation you really need to pre-purge anyway so having the setup will put you a step ahead of the game. There really is no advantage to carrying argon with you on the dive if you are using air or nitrox as back gas.

Uncle Pug,

That's an interesting point, I had never heard that before. When I have dove with people using argon and they did vent all the air outor their suits before entering the water and then fill the suit all the way up with argon.
I don't know too much argon myself except that it is very popular in this area of the country. I don't like the idea of carrying more gear, but, with water temps in the low 40s for a good part of the year, anything that helps is nice. I will probably ask to borrow an argon bottle and try it myself before purchasing a set-up.

Some folks use 13~14cf argon bottles so they can purge with them... we carry small 6cf argon bottles and only use them to add a small amount of gas to the suit to take the excessive squeeze off.

We pre-purge our suits before the dive using a single steel 72 containing argon with a first stage and only an inflator whip attached... the 72 is clearly marked ARGON... so no one would accidently use it for breathing. I filled this tank up months ago and we are still using it!

Setting up a tank like this is not really very expensive and if you are using a lp steel like the 72 (2200psi) fills are not hard to obtain.

The little bit of back gas (air or EAN) that you add to the argon in the suit while diving will not hinder the thermal properties of the argon.

Conversely if you only have air in your suit to begin with the little bit of argon that you add while diving would really do no good.

We often invite other divers diving with use to use our 72 to purge their suits... the cost is minimal... and it makes them happy:D

Uncle Pug,

Your last post makes alot of sense and I will certainly look into it, I see cheap lp 72s around all the time. Thanks for the advice.

Sound like you need a more Tech or DIR-orinted LDS! They are clueless....Lord!
