I also think it is a Flying Gurnard but wasn't sure. It kept advancing towards me on the bottom but never spread its fins as Gurnard's often do.

yeah, looking at the pic in the Hoover book it seems in your fish the "wing"s aren't long enough and the pattern is different....sadly I can't see the head as well as in your photo. Very interested in the results.

I thought Gurnard too, but….I wonder if it could be a juvenile. I looked in Shore Fishes of Hawaii and Fishes of Hawaii as well but no mention of juvenile. Looks like that lower jaw protruding is all wrong. But here on http://nene.essortment.com/strangefish_rwqt.htm it says, “The young flying gurnards have small pectoral fins that are so different from the adults that they were once place in another genus.” So, very interesting! A couple of other links maybe worth pursuing (from google). http://www.sealife-timmendorf.de/Quiz01b.pdf

And gee, your photos are superb…well as far as I have seen.

That crab in good coral surround, perfect framing. That Gurnardy thingy popping out of the same background, very impressive. When I was getting desert lizards and toads it was a huge challenge to see the dang things even when I knew what I was looking for. I’m sure if I had a good camera I could do so well underwater – HA!!!!!!

"Tortuga" ID'd the fish for me. It is a Longtail Dragonet and is not in the Hoover book.
A pic of it is here

I like very much the crab. What strange blue eyes he has…

But why can I not dive every day like you do. I am so evious…

Thank you for the stuff on Hoover!!!! Yea gads, I have an old book. They look the same and I missed reprint had updates. Nor have I looked for his site – way cool stuff. I was going to bed ages ago and got stuck there and the places he led to.
Ah, a Dragonet…that was cheating not showing the long tail….or just my be lazy and not look for it

Nice pictures as usual! thanks

Again, really nice pictures. The Longtail Dragonet is really interesting. I like the crab pic the best.
