Within the last few weeks, I saw a post about the 3rd ferry company being shut down for not having a permit, or environmental impact form, or something along those lines. On our last bag drag(Nov. 2), we used them and honestly could not tell a difference between the other two companies, other than saving a few bucks and there was no line to board..

Are they back in operation? just curious.

Thanks,
Jay

As best as I can tell Barcos Caribe is still in operation. Per the Yucatan Times the city of Playa Del Carmen shut down their ticket booth because they did not have a local 'enviromental' permit. So they tried selling tickets on the pier, then that got shut down. Now I have heard that you go on board the ferry and purchase your ticket onboard. On the Cozumel side the ticket booths are on the pier and it is under federal control and it is business as usual.
The big difference other than a little better pricing is that they operate the early ferry and last evening (11PM) ferry, which is important for bag drag divers. As to why, you would need to open a thread in the Pub to discuss politics and corruption in Mexico.

I'm a bit surprised none of the Barcos Caribe boats have mysteriously gone up in flames yet...

Besides the early and late times, they also run a few between the times of the other two companies. The competition is much-needed.

I'm surprised as well.

We've taken the ferry frequently the last two years, and it's been a bit of a hoot to see them (all 3) speed up departures and delay departures in an attempt to gain advantage. They were at times successful and of course shot themselves in the foot at other times.

Posted departure times were like stop signs; suggestions.

Can't think of many situations when competition is a bad thing.

Ferry prices to drop.

Looks like the competition has broken the collusion of the two major ferry companies.

They tried to shut down barco carribe's ticket booth in playa last month.

Shipping Companies break agreement

COZUMEL, 1 December.- seems to have come to an end the alliance between Cruise and Maritime shipping overseas, since the latter were annulled the pact to distribute schedules and prices for one- way trips.
This can be noted in the Fiscal Pier Cozumel because shipping companies overseas and Cruise Ships Caribbean are no longer respecting the alliance that maintained between them for some years, since years before the entry Boat Caribbean put agree to handle your taste rate of almost 163 pesos per single trip to Playa del Carmen federal route and similarly set to the convenience of both companies sailing schedules, insomuch suppress the first crossing of the 05 : 30 hours to the continental massif and eliminating at will the crossing of 23 hours from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel.
According to unofficial sources the breakdown of convenencieras relations of the two shipping companies that had endured solid for years denoted cracking since the arrival of boats Caribbean, a year ago, now seems to have culminated after the overseas company incorporated a week ago a new boat to the federal route and decided to resume the intersection of 0530 leaving Cozumel and adding crossing 23:00 from Playa del Carmen, since keep their departures every hour, not before sharing operations with Maritime Cruise leaving the island for afew hours without transportation to Playa del Carmen, now up tothree boats run on the same schedule.
Meanwhile Cruise Maritime adopted the modality to reduce their rates to almost 50 percent of what was driving, now a single trip costs 83 pesos, with local plan 60 pesos and 100 round trip, and 30 pesos children and it is oscillated at 163 pesos before the simple cross.
The overseas company manages its plan Quintana Roo a price of 70 pesos per single trip adult and 30 pesos per child; if tourists continue to pay 163 pesos adults and a child pays 97 pesos.
This means that if you could reduce costs for years but they did and both shippers kept the population as a kind of commercial hostage, since every year out with the argument that high fuel costs the "forced "to raise rates, but seeing boats Caribbean continues with its policy of low prices had to be adjusted.

We will be doing our first bag drag in 2 weeks. Any tips?

What terminal do you arrive in? We had always come into terminal 3 where you exit the doors and walk to the podium on the right to buy your tickets. On our last trip, we came into Terminal 2 (Southwest) and got scammed by a girl that told us bus tickets were now $20 each, it didn't sound right but we paid it. Then, They came up with the story that the bus would be 20 minutes out, or for $10 more, they would take us in a car. It ended up taking 3 vehicles to get us to Playa. Oh well....paid the gringo tax on that one.

Make sure you know how to get the bus tickets based on the terminal you arrive in.

Safe travels,
Jay
