Hello

Decision between a 30 or 40 lbs March V wing

Body weight: 175
Salt Water Southern California
7MM Full Suit
HP 100 Worthing steel tank
Currently diving with 14 pounds of lead when tank is charged

With the above profile, should I go with a 40 or 30 pounder wing?

Thanks!

The thing is that if I understand it correctly the Mach V series was designed around a 7.25 inch diamter tank. I am positive it would be OK on an 8 inch but beyond that not sure. The wing is so narrow and the tank channel so narrow to eliminate the dreaded "Taco Effect' and reduce drag that a larger diameter tank may restrict the full inflation. I carry about the same amount of lead with a 7mm in SoCal, and my Mach V is fine with both 7.25" and 8.0" tanks.

Be sure to use an STA, however... that probably helps. I suspect the issue could be worse when using the new STA-less design without a STA.

The OP is using an HP100, however, so should be fine.

I dive this setup regularly:
  • Fred T SS Backplate - simple HOG harness
  • Fred T SS STA (w/Scubapro Cinch bands FWIW)
  • Worthington HP 100
  • OxyCheq 30# wing
I only have about 30 dives on the wing, but really like it. It fits very tight around the tank, and not a lot of flapping around. Makes a very nice package with low drag in the water.

I am slightly heavier than you, and usually dive fresh water in Lake Jocassee in the Upstate of SC. In the winter I dive a Bare 7mm Arctic wetsuit, and no additional lead. During a recent trip to the Caribbean, I ended up with 8# with a 0.5mm Steamer.

The 30# wing should be more than enough unless you are carrying a lot of heavy gear such as Stage bottles, etc. and need the extra lift. I feel that you should dive with the minimum wing capacity you can get away with!

I will be posting a full in-water evaluation of the wing on my blog below in the very near future.
