East Timor was occupied by Indonesia for 25 years before gaining independance in 1999

Ok I know all that and their history helping Australia during WWII...so what is your point and what does it have to do with the great diving I have done there?

Eh, my point was that the topic is diving in Indonesia and that East Timor is not part of Indonesia

Nothing to do with diving, which is why I said 'politically' it might upset some people (ie East Timorese)

Like to dive there myself one day

Sorry My Bad!....East Timor is in the Indonesian AREA (not to far from Bali) and the nation of East Timor which used to be part of Indonesia...has excellent diving....LOL

Yes, don't ignore East Timor which is damn close to Indonesia (inches away at some points). I just returned from my second trip there as was rewarded with two species of Rhinopias, ornate ghost pipe fish, thorny sea horses, blue ringed octopus, lots of mantis shrimp, a tiny 5mm yellow box fish baby and the usual great marine life. I missed the dugong that my wife saw by a whisker but the place is definitely worth checking out. All the above was found without guides - imagine what else there was to see.

Please tell us more about the diving there! You write that you dove without a guide... Does it mean that you just rent tanks and went exploring by yourself?
Is it difficult to organize a diving trip there?
Thanks

I agree with Malene! I would love to hear more about the diving in East Timor. I have been to the airport there on the way back from Maumere and that is it. Can you give us some specifics Zippsy and Travelnsj? It sounds amazing! Thanks in advance!

Here is my Bali-East Timor trip report from 4 years ago http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/indonesia/160917-bali-timor-trip-09-06-a.html . This was excellent diving only a couple of hours from Bali and Dive Timor was a great operation but my dive guide was not fimiliar with the area...overall I thought this was much better diving than Wakatobi and better than Bali.

Remember East Timor is in the Indonesian Area and no longer part of Indonesia...so I guess it should not be discussed on this thread as this is about Indonesian diving...but my trip report is Bali and Timor!!!!....LOL...LOL

Well, since the OP hasn't piped up, let's say for all intents etc. East Timor is reasonable to include here. I googled "Dive Timor Lorosae", which i am not sure is the same outfit as you described TI--do you happen to know if it is? The diving sounds great but their rates, not so.
($165. for 2 tank boat dive, $45. shore dive.) It sure sounds like wonderful diving though.

Since you were there 4 yrs ago maybe someone has more recent experiences or perhaps this is not the same outfit you dove with? Also, maybe someone could offer input on ease of getting from say Bali to Timor. (I mean Cuba is 90 miles away from US but it ain't easy to get to!) Very much appreciated your trip report--makes my bucket list just that much longer! Thanx! // ww
