We took a group , including a class of 4 advanced students on a afternoon /night dive on the Escapade boat. The wonderful crew and captain Jimmy helped us all to board for our 2pm departure. After a briefing we left the dock.
The wind was coming on shore and was supposed to be building. The conditions we going to be iffy. We were going to be staying within the bay to dive. Our first dive was going to be a deep dive for the students to 80'. The boat set anchor on the Hopkins reef site.
The temp was 15-20'. There was a moderate surge. We desended the anchor line onto the reef at 60'. The Metridium Fields here are beautiful. We all had a pleasant dive to 76' with water temp of around 54 degrees.
Once back on the boat it appeared that the winds were going to die down and not pick up. We would be able to do the night dive. The boat moved to our next site at the shale shelves. This would also be the site of our night dive. After completing our SIT we got ready for our 2nd dive. Now 2 of our advanced student were sea sick and couldn't dive. A third was chilly but felt he was fine to dive. The 4th was excited to go. We all enter the water and descended to 50'. The temp and vis was the same. The shelves were beautiful with lots of strawberry anemomes. With a flashlights we explored the nooks and crannnies of the shelves. This would be a beautiful night dive.
Back on the boat Captian Jimmy told us the wind was dying and we would be able to do the night dive. Unfortunately 1 student was very sick, 1 was queasy, 1 was shivering with cold, and only 1 was excited to hang out and do the night dive. After a vote the night dive plans were cancelled and we headed back to the harbor.
This was my first dive from the Escapade. I really enjoyed the boat set up and the experianced crew & captain. The conditions were very dive able and enjoyable. I will enjoy diving again from the Escapade.
