How many divers have experienced a 2nd stage problem that caused them to reach for their alternate? (i.e. freeflows etc.)

i've had three primary regs, and never had a problem with any of them

(Dacor Fury, SeaElite Tech, Apeks 50)

I refuse to answer for fear of jinxing my good fortune to date.

Being in a different situation than most and testing a lot of regs over a wide variety of conditions I have free flowed a plethora of them.

I had a small pebble get stuck in my second stage that didn't cause a problem until I got to depth. I switched to my safe second, removed the cover, removed the pebble and switched back. Not a big problem but it 's the one time I've ever used my safe second on a dive except for training.

I have had a few under water.

One case had to do with blowing up a deco buoy using the 2nd stage and it froze open. Not a violent freeflow but bad enough that I needed to use my secondary and shut down the primary for a few minutes to let it thaw out. That was my own doing and I now use a different technique to blow up the blob.

Another one was probably avoidable too. I was diving along and thought "hmmm, my reg is breathing pretty wet" and no sooner had I thought that the mouthpiece fell clean off the 2nd stage. The tiewrap had broken free. The reg was metal and the mouthpiece wasn't an original for that type of reg and it was able to slip off. At that time my own AAS was an Air2 so we had to abort the dive.

The first time was the most interesting. I had about 20 dives or so and as I recall we were either just doing or just finished AOW. We were diving in a group and the plan was to decend with your buddy from the surface to a shelf at 60ft. We were going to dive to 130ft and we were to assemble on the shelf and then decend together from there. I had a rental reg and it was the first dive of the day. During the pre-dive checks the reg worked fine but just as we got to the shelf I suddenly started inhaling large amounts of sand! I guess there was sand caked all over the inside of the reg but it didn't come off until it started to get a bit wet. I switched to my octopus while I tried to figure out what the heck was happening, which my buddy saw right away and he came right over, octoups at the ready.... (kind of a nice thought after all of the moaning you hear about people's buddies.... :)). When he gave me "OK" I pointed my primary at him and blew a little cloud of sand in his direction... :D He first asked me if I wanted to surface but I waved it off and he waited by me while I cleaned it out (I was afraid that my octopus would be full of sand too) and once I was sorted we continued the dive. Neither one of us is high strung so it didn't get scary.
