We are meeting in the far North West (far corner from pier and closest to ocean) at 2:00 p.m. on Friday 26 November the day after turkey day. Bring 2 tanks and your night dive gear. If the site proves to be good, I am game for a night dive too.

We are intending to dive the Santa Monica Break wall which runs parallel to shore and is approximately 350 yards from shore and 130 yards form the end of the pier. Please note we are NOT diving the PIER we are diving a break wall 130 yards away. Parking is $7.00.

What to expect? Don’t know. Dive site books only mention the break wall exist, but don’t describe it. I have talked to some who have dove it. Visibility is often poor here. But if the visibility is good, I am told this is a very good dive. Given the location, I would expect some current on the swim out which is why we are starting well away from the pier. From the satellite photos the break wall does not break the surface except intermittently and is about 15 feet wide .

How to get there: TGNO 671E3
From the south or East. Take Santa Monica 10 Freeway to 4th street. Exit and go north to Colorado. Turn Left to Ocean and then turn Right on Ocean and go north east to California. Turn left onto the California Incline. At the bottom of the hill turn Left onto Pacific Coast Highway South. Take the right fork when PCH veers to the left to go into the McClure tunnel stay to the right and go straight into the parking lot for the Pier.

From Malibu: onto Pacific Coast Highway South. PCH South past the private club at the base of the California Incline. Take the right fork when PCH veers to the left to go into the McClure tunnel stay to the right and go straight into the parking lot for the Pier.

Due to the county still rating the water quality as poor and allegedly (according to their web site) having warning signs posted we are going to delay, once again this dive for another day. Leo Carrillo at 2:00 ish is the new plan.n Far end of the parking lot near the restroom.

The Los Angeles County has warning signs posted for the Santa Monica Pier area due to water quality at present and a grade of C. The Heal the Bay folks are still giving it an F. So that being said, we bailed and dived Leo Carrillo which was beautiful with 20-30 foot visibility.

As we drove by the Santa Monica Pier on our way to Leo Carrillo we noticed it was a moot point anyway as the parking lot was occupied by a rather large (as in humongous) circus tent (Circus Sole' is in town for a month) occupying the entire space so we would not have had a place to park any where near the beach anyway. With a 350 yard swim and a rather wide beach to cross already, adding leaving from a parking lot over at the mall (on the Friday after Thanksgiving!) was just not an option anyway. We will try this yet again when the circus tents leave and the water quality improves. This spot had an A rating until the rains came.
