My favorite list remains Lazarus Long's (Heinlein)...
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

Strike out on 13 don't fish - not sure I buy all the tech stuff and haven't bled brakes in 15 years. Not a required skill any more. But then I used to own three dump trucks so can do pretty much anything mechanical from change a tire to rebuild the transmission (as long as its a standard).

Extend a wireless network????? I'm in the tech business and have never done such a thing. Know how, but as a necessary skill I don't think so.

I read Heinlein as a kid and took it to heart. Now I am good at a whole bunch of things and great at nothing! Specialization can lead to being the best at something - a generalist can do pretty much anything, but to be great at something you need to work damn hard at it and be focused on that one thing. Not complaining - just an observation.

. . .And to correctly anticipate & provide for every need, expectation and mood of your Girlfriend or Wife. . . (or Girlfriend and Wife:D )

Rick

yea, I vote for that one.

I really cannot handle men that know less than I do about tools, its seems so unforgivable.
oh..and they should have callouses on their hands, I don't really care how they get them. Men should not have silky paper pusher hands. If you are overly white caller, sail a boat or something.

Oh...ride a horse.

I CAN paddle a canoe, but is by no means an expert on it. Cleaning rifles however I have done many a night.. Took some time to figure out how that damn sargent kept finding dirt in them! I still suspect he brought some of his own for the times where wed done a too good job :p

Extending the wlan I really dont think I would consider an "essential" skill tho.. Securing it would be more needed to learn for most people (Yep, I will use your unsecured wlan if I happen to sit within its range with my laptop. Dont worry, I dont do anything illegal with it)
