We have had recent sellers post high end computers for sale with just stock photos from the manufacturer.

It’s gotten so bad with the scammers that mods had to shut off the DM function for all new members.

Buying with financial recourse is ALWAYS a smarter way to go. "Hey credit card company, this gal never delivered the product I ordered. I need my money back."

No, CC rates are so high because USERS agree to PAY that much. Banks only charge what you think is a fair amount and agree to pay. Why, I know people (well persons, well one person, well me) that charge thousands of dollars on credit cards each year and pay no interest or fees. Actually get a few hundred bucks back.

In this case, the disputes are charged back to the receiver's account, or to at least their bank. They have an obligation (a legal obligation) to know their customer. And not do business with/facilitate scammers. When one opens a bank account they have to provide some pretty solid ID support. Or should. Unless that bank is doing a shoddy job.

Those "past-century CC policies" were put in place to punish scammers, not victims of the scams. Matter of fact, advice listed at the start of each classifieds section on SB includes the caution "If you must use the mail [to complete a transaction delivery], use PayPal and list it as a sale or auction and not as a 'gift'."

LOL. No, absolutely not! Sorry for any possible confusion!
But the situation of concern is when the seller is indeed a scammer. Too many SBers have been bitten by that snake. Which is why the concern was raised here....if for no other reason than to show the right way to sell something on SB. And CC's are rarely involved, so all the BS about getting your money back is hot air.

Scam seller agrees to sell non-existant item to victim. Victim sends CC funds (or bank ACH) through PP. Scammer gladly accepts money, but doesn't send goods. Victim goes back to PP (or through their CC fraud dept) and contests the transaction. They go to the scammer's bank account or PP account balance and deduct the victim's funds and reimburse the victim. That's how that typically works. Please enlighten me otherwise.

THAT is how a SB member (or as called here "victim") protects himself from bad gals doing bad things. Not some silly "You need to show us a picture of your Teric showing the S/N screen and # of dives logged!" interjections from gawkers. Staying at a Holiday Inn Express does not make one a professional fraud investigator or prevention specialist.
