2007 Remembered - Your Best Dive

My best dive was the first night dive at Phillips at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba where I got to see phosfluorescence for the first time! A bunch of coral glowed in the dark, it was sooo cool. And in a place not a lot of divers get to see . . . I refer to it as my GTMO GLOW dive.

Hmmmm...while I had a few great local dives, I still have to flag my two dives on the Thunderbolt as my best dives of the year!

Reason one....first deep ocean dives
Reason two....first dives over 100 ft
Reason three..first REAL wreck penetration
Reason four....just two great dives!

I'm hooked on wrecks, and I'm hooked on deep!

Next year...the Speigel Grove and the Vandenberg! (and if I can pull it off, the T-Bolt again, and MAYBE the Duane!)

On our ascent I did as planned and swam up to my brother doing the OOA signal. I was figuring he'd deploy his octo and I'd get some air. What I get is a blank stare back at me.
I continued doing the throat slash more earnestly now and am still met with a blank stare. Then I decide to start tugging at his octo hoping that he'd get the hint. Still nothing. Eventually I just rip his octo from it's clip (it was harder to pull out than I thought it'd be) and take a few breaths. The whole time he's just looking at me with this "***" expression on his face. After I take my few breaths I return his octo to him and switch back to my primary.

Sounds like a few S-drills are in order before your next dive together.

Best dive, 2007... tough one... But, I have to say...

My 600th at Venice Beach in June. That was a 35 minute dive that really showed me who my friends were. Most would think it an eventless dive, but it really showed me who my friends were and how much they think of me...

Truely a life altering experience. It changed my "above water" life for the better (There was a divorce the year before).

For 2007 my best dive(s) were near Tortugas Key in Florida. Huge groupers, beautiful eagle rays and sea turtles, a giant nurse shark asleep in the midst of a natural shipwreck, lobsters under every ledge, my gosh! what beauty and magnificence!

For 2008 I will visit Kona and see if the aloha state can match the sunshine state for scuba!

For 2009 same thing with the GBR Australia.

This is easy, it would be the first dive after my certification I earned my c card and 3 days later I was in key largo diving the Benwwod wreck. I remember coming around the bow of the ship and seeing all these yellow fish huddled against the wreck and as i got a little closer they all started to kinda swim around me close enough to touch them as i swam away they swam with me and all i could think about was wow how cool is this from that point forward i was a diver for life

All the best dives are the ones where I come back to the surface with the same amount of people I went down with.

AMEN! We lost one in January, my very first dive of 2007.

My favorite dive of the year...June, Oil rig, Flower Gardens, Gulf of Mexico, covered in small silky and reef sharks, turtles and literally thousands of smaller other fish.

My best dive of the year was at Coconut on Apo Island, Philippines. While the dive was stunning, the whole Apo experience really made it an adventure. From the little banca crossing in rough seas to renting a bungalow in the village as opposed to staying at one of the two main resorts, to eating dinner with the locals, and singing karaoke until they turned the electricity off for the night, it was a trip that makes you feel like you are in another time.
The runner up for the year has to be Dos Ojas, my first cenote dive. For those who haven't dove Dos Ojas but are planning to, be careful of the alligator.

Nothing tropical here, but I was cetified as a DM and got my extended range cert. On our final dive at 200' we ran across an old abandoned gill net that I've only seen videos of. What a sight!!! and the life, awesome. Full on deco diving is a serious commitment, but wouldn't exchange it for anything. Next year looking too get my instructor and advanced trimix through TDI to a depth of 330'. Hopefully things go well. Possibly even start my own LDS, kick me in the head, but it's been a dream that at this point my become a reality. Happy new year too all and hopefully safe dive ventures for all involved.
