Very true; in concept.

Also true is that just surviving a bad idea doesn’t make it a good idea.
I feel this is a bit dramatic. 1 AL40 for solo redundancy is pretty standard. Slinging it from the backplate instead of clipping it to the upper D ring and adding a second one on the other side to practice side mount drills would kill me?

Think you missed the point. Never said I had a problem with RMV.

I think I understand exactly what you’re doing.

You’re not the first one to want redundancy or a symmetrical rig. I’ve been there done that and came to the same conclusion you ultimately will; the common solutions are common because they work the best.

Listen, I like tinkering with stuff more than most people, but what you’re doing IS a Frankenstein rig and no, you’re not gonna get a high 5 here for being creative.

Get into a set of of doubles, SM, or just learn to sling a 40.

Three regs for an NDL dive is a bit of a clusterF for sure. The drag of all these tanks is going to bump up your SAC significantly.

Who said kill? Now who’s being dramatic?

Something to think about for SM shore entries, seeing you’re in the north-east. Loop bungies might not be the best option. At least in NJ, with full size bottles I wouldn’t want to try to loop in standing in chest deep surf and walking in isn’t really an option. I use a DiveRite rig with ring bungies. The bottles are clipped in and secure. I know there are critics but for rough surf or boat diving in the North Atlantic, loop bungies wouldn’t be my first choice. Probably my fifth choice, right after not diving at all.

Isn't the OP's description much like the PADI setup for TEC50? Backmount bottom gas (usually doubles), a slung AL40 of EAN50, a slung AL40 of O2?

Tec50 requires doubles. Back mounted and manifolds or could be SM. And yes, two slung deco bottles. This is a pretty standard set up for deco dives in the 50m+/- range before and since it has been established as course standards by the various agencies.

The OPs question/request for feedback was in the context of 1) extending range/creating redundancy for an NDL dive, not 2) a broad inquiry about how to configure deco gas for a deco dive.

The answer to 1 is there are better ways to accomplish the objectives than his configuration. 2 is irrelevant to 1.
