I have been diving for 8 years now and I think its time to buy a computer, I have held off long enough but its time since I plan on doing Nitrox and will be planning a live aboard trip next spring doing multiple dives. Thus far I have been uning conservitave tables and a dive watch with a bottom timer. I know, I know, its the 20th century and I need one. My question is that most of the time I always dive with my wife and we pretty much set our gear up the same way so we are both very familiar with each others setups and even have our tanks extremely closely matched to our own air consumptions. When we dive we always stay very close and in constant communication. If we always dive the same times with the same profile can we share a computer. I know I am going to get alot of answers which is great. Does anyone else do this or do I really need to get 2 computers.. For you you guys that thing you spend alot on equipment..Now double it for 2 people.. My garage after a dive day looks like the local dive shop exploded :D

I can feel for you, I have a spouse and a son who dive, and I also supply equipment to my two brothers when visit to dive. My den does look like a dive shop.

It is obvious that "Sharing" a dive computer can theoretically work or you would not even be asking the question. But to make it work you and your buddy have to stay together, stay at the same depth throughout the dive and dive the computer conservatively. And while it can theoretically work it is a potentially dangerous practice that is not accepted in the industry.

Or to put it simply, dive computers are cheap, DCS treatment and insurance deductibles are not. Given that you can find a used dive computer in working order for $100-150, it's hard to justify not having one for each diver.

I am just looking at it in the basics which I know is not the right way. Simple terms... the computer would not tell a different story on her wrist or mine as long as we stay together. I guess I am trying to hard to simplfy this. Its really not about the money because I am just waiting for the "your wife's life is not worth $500" responce..She has got to be closer to the $1,000 mark by now :D Just thinking its one less thing she needs to figure out and keep track of. I just put her through AOW and she is doing really well. Have been trying to dive with her at least once a week. Keep up the good responces.. I have a feeling I will be getting her a computer by the end of this thread.. :wavey:

Very simple answere:Get 2 computers!
You don't have to spend a mint on them but get two PERIOD>
Knock off 3 cups of coffee a week and you can have the cash real soon.

computers are fun .my buddy has the same one as me ,his wrist mount, mine is consloe clipped to top d ring on bc.when we dive he always shows a deeper depth than mine ,other than that all data is the same .if you and your wife always dive together then I do not see the need for 2 ,when you use a bottom timer also.but say you go off with some male buddys ,and a friend calls her up to go diveing then what? ,you have the comp, and she has nothing.the other reason is back up.when I dive my plan is if the comp fails ,DIVE OVER.with you and wife if yours fails and hers works you can keeping diveing.just my 2 cents

Chris,

Emergencies have this annoying habit of not occurring the way we envisioned them occurring. You may have been diving for 8 years now, but if you've never had anything go seriously south while submerged,...lets just say it can screw up your afternoon.

Nice to think that you and your buddy will always be at arms reach.

May not always happen the way you plan.

Get two computers.

Well put. Just change AFTERNOON to LIFE.

I too believe both of you need to have your own computer. Increased safety and redundancy are not a bad thing. I bought an Atmos Aeris 2 from Larry at Scubatoys.com. It's easy to use and didn't cost a fortune.

What? Maybe one computer is enough. ;)

Actually, you can go with one computer, but then you still dive the tables. You can have just one of the divers with a computer, but you cannot share the data. I could be wrong (my wife just said, "THATS for sure"), but it sounds like you're looking for someone to agree with you.
One computer for each diver or dive the tables. Tables, computers or a mix of both, always default the the most conservative of the team.
IMHO

Actually I am just looking for some backup to go get two computers. One great thing about this site is that there are always opinons that I might not have thought of which really help make us smarter and more educated divers with the end result being safter and thats the most important thing. I look at it as we have been diving tables for awhile and thinking of adding 1 computer must be better then none. But you guys make some great points and I really appreciate all the advise I have recieved. I am actually on the way out to look at some options..

I am waiting for Uncle Pugs opinon.. Where are ya :wavey:
