My wife and I each have about 120 dives but we've never done the shore diving thing. Well, it's about friggin' time 8o) so we're going over to Catalina on Labor day to do the dive park. We plan to rent tanks and weights from Scuba Luv (it's been a few years, but we've dived with them before).

Anything we should know before we jump in? Will we be seeing any of you when we go?

Thanks!

Although it's on the shore, I wouldn't really call it a "shore dive" since no other shore dive has concrete steps into the water or lacks the usual "waves" so characteristic of a "shore dive." It's more like a dive from a concrete boat :) Have fun!

Oh, come on you purists... it is indeed a shore dive. A sheltered shore dive. You can make it a "real" (class A) shore dive by entering over the rocks like we always used to (and I still do on busy weekends).

I'll be out on Scuba L uv's dive boat, the King Neptune, this weekend so I most likely won't be at the park at all.

We will be at the Dive Park on Saturday, wondering who else is going over??

Well, I guess I deserved that. 8o) Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting wet! Hope to see y'all out there.

Wade- that wasn't critical of you. Come to think of it, it wasn't really critical of anyone. I was just teasing those who don't consider Casino Pt. a shore dive!

Wade,

I just started diving, and I LOVE the underwater park! And... I log it as a shore dive, even though it's an easy one. Here are a couple tips I gleaned from a recent article in California Diving News, that really helped me.

If you decide not to take a taxi from the landing to the dive park, you'll have to schlep your gear through Avalon. It helps if you put your gear in a big suitcase on wheels.

Catch the 6:15 am Catalina Express from Long Beach - that way you'll be one of the first to splash! The Catalina Diver's Supply van is located right at the park - opens at 8:00 am. They have tanks, air and weights right there. If you're first in line at the van you'll be finishing your first dive about when everybody else is lining up at the stairs. Then just wait for the first wave to exit the park and make your second dive. Also, the park often clears by 1:30, as people head back to the mainland on the 2:00 Catalina Express, so you might want to do a dive around 2:00

Bring a tarp to lay your gear out. Even though the ready area is paved, it's still gritty, and the tarp will save your gear.

Bring quarters for the lockers and showers. Lockers are extremely convenient and by putting valuables in there you can dive without a second thought!

Don't count on the bathrooms being open at the casino. They were closed for repairs last time I was there - about a month ago.

I like doing my last dive in the kelp at the north end of the park near the shore, in 25 to 30 fsw. Seems like there's a little current that comes through that makes visibility crystal clear, and my air lasts forever. While visibility is usually great throughout the park, it seems to be best up in that corner, where the current enters the park. Dr. Bill may actually wish to comment here, since he dives there all the time!

Hope that helps!

Way cool -- thanks!

And, Dr. Bill, no worries. I just wanted to show that I could take a little ribbing from my fellow ScubaBoarders. :D

We haven't been diving this summer and I sure am looking forward to getting wet!

For what it is worth, the dive park is a SHORE dive. However I don't consider it a BEACH dive. And Casino Point can be tricky for many people (based on my observations over the years)... especially at low tide when the rocks in front of the stairs are exposed, or on budy weekends when the snorkelers create an obstacle course to get in.

Glad I'm mainly boat diving the past few weeks although I miss the comraderie of the park as well.

Bill
