Ok, situation is this. I found out recently that a diving mate of mine got bent during a dive of less than 10m and well within table limits. He had to spend time in a chamber.

Obviously, and quite selfishly I wonder if this will happen again, especially as it happened at such a shallow depth. If there is a significant risk, I want to be able to make an informed choice about whether to dive with him again.

Help?

Hi booga_roo,

Can you give us a bit more information?

It is quite possible for anyone to have DCI after a dive to 10 metres, but there must have been a number of predisposing factors. For example, was this the last of a long series of dives over several days, was it during a training dive, i.e. with a yo-yo profile and what was the dive duration, and the fitness and hydration status of the victim?

In addition, did he/she undertake any form of post-dive exercise such as clambering up cliffs with his/her kit, for example?

I strongly suspect the latter may have applied.

Remember the decompression phase of the surface interval lasts over two days for nitrogen and any form of heavy exercise is thought to predispose to the generation of micronuclei.
