Hey Oldflounder; Thanks...Checked out 1000 islands sounds great. What about lake Winnippasaki? Dive shop in Wolfeboro does tons of ice diving? Also Lake george

Porgyhunter ---I know our shops do it locally, but the past few years we have had mild winters and poor ice conditions. I think Thousand Islands wreck diving under the ice should only be attempted by the experienced - it's certainly not something I would attempt - except for maybe the Islander which I have dove before and which starts at 20' off the shore access steps, goes down to the stern at 65' and has negligible current. And I would need a tender on shore for sure. From what we are hearing here the ice may not even be safe yet even there. I just want to get away for a few days after Christmas. Maybe I'll even head south and do the Frozen Fin New Years' dive at Fort Wetherill, Jamestown with an overnight.

I used to train folks to ice dive at the 1k islands years ago. The ice is pretty good around February. Moe, or Khris Hunt certainly know folks who can offer ice diving classes. Andrew Diver of Blue Foot Diving is also in the area though he is a technical instructor trainer and frequently traveling.

As per ice diving - it's definitely an experience best buffered by a warming tent, hot beverages on site, pallets, or styrofoam blocks to step on when tending and regulators that are resistant to freezing. The funny thing about ice diving is that I rarely saw clientele return for another go. Could be that blizzard conditions on certain days on the St. Lawrence made it less-than-fun. I also taught at Winniepausake.
