Treading water, when done correctly, does NOT require a whole lot of energy. I would ask a swim coach to give you a 30 minute lesson on treading water - it probably won't even take that long to learn. Seriously, if you are ever going to get in a boat, let alone scuba dive, the ability to tread water seems like a good idea to me. I wish I could write out instructions on how to do it, but I wouldn't know where to begin. Find a swim coach. They'll be more than happy to help you and it'll put your concerns to rest once you learn how easy it really is. :) Good luck!!
