Dumbest things you've seen a newbie diver do

I actually got a pretty good deal on a pair of fins. The fella selling them was getting out of scuba diving.. the only problem with the fins, other than being scuffed up to hell and back (?!?) was that one of the 'pocket protectors' was badly cracked, and I suspect he dove with them on.

What to do about HORRIBLE instructor?

Not trying to get you to name names. Just asking for clarification on the situation, better trained/experienced people can help you understand your training and would love for nothing more than to help you get on a positive track with your diving. This place DOES serve as a review site...

What to do about HORRIBLE instructor?

If you think he's a scubaboard member, then you should do the courtesy of allowing him to answer your allegations here. You don't have to name him, but the majority of the members here can really help provide perspective on a situation.. if they're *told* about what went on during that...

8 die in Cancun bar from an 'attack'

This makes me sad. My heart's in Q. Roo, as I spent my honeymoon in Playa Del Carmen, and we have a relative with vacation property on Isla Mujeres. Won't stop me from visiting, however. Just means I need to spend more time underwater, where molotov cocktails can't affect me. :lol

VOTE BY FRIDAY to help a Title 1 school win $500,000

Kohl's is giving away $500,000 to the top 20 schools that get voted upon over on Facebook. The sad part is, the schools that really need this money don't have the resources to get word out. This touched my heart, and I wanted to repost it here and encourage y'all to take 30 seconds and vote...

PADI class has dive calculator instead of tables now?

Everyone needs to learn the tables. If nothing else, you need to be able to follow altitude and nitrox tables, should you encounter them in the course of your diving career. The tools may be nice, but should not entirely supplant the instruction of tables.

Are you a flyer or a looker?

I had to really stop and think about this one.. but I've determined that I'm most definitely a flyer. Given the types of dives available to me in Utah (thermally fed pools and glacial lakes), I dive locally for the sheer enjoyment of diving, and the furthering of my skills. The stuff I *see* on...

    Barotrauma relief help

Unfortunately, time is the main component of your recovery path. I once had a barotraumatic incident resulting in a migraine that wrapped around the whole back of my head, damn near incapacitating me for several weeks. All I could do was take pain medication and wait.

    What is it?

Did you get lost on your way to The Pub?

    What is it?

I used to have a hole in my ear, a little bit bigger than wire gauge size 00. In other words, I could slip a magic marker through it or hang a padlock from it. I started stretching it with an acrylic taper. Mine was straight, but others (like this one) are in a spiral shape. They are gradually...

    Got certified.Some SMALL questions

If that's the path you're interested in, I highly recommend that you buy the book "Doing It Right: The Fundamentals of Better Diving," by Jarrod Jablonski. It's important that, before you make any gear changes or choices, you clearly understand WHY you are making those changes. Welcome to...

Dear god, that's a chilling thought right there.

    Got certified.Some SMALL questions

Are you sure you're not confusing decompression obligation with a safety stop? In recreational diving, a safety stop is drilled into you but if you stay within the limits of your training you will be fine. Deco obligations are an invisible overhead that you aren't trained for, but that you...

    Got certified.Some SMALL questions

It sounds like PADI is the agency of focus? You may wish to seek out an SSI shop and take the specialties you're most interested in - full courses, that together earn the AOW cert. I enjoyed my Night/Low Vis specialty, as well as my Deep specialty. You'll have gotten the official experience and...

Help Me Choose the Perfect BP/W Setup

I also highly recommend calling Tobin at DSS. He is the master of qualifying and selling you exactly what you need. Most backplate you get will most likely be able to do both single and double tank diving. You will definitely need two wings (get a singles wing now, wait on the doubles wing), but...

    Shark attack response

I think it's good to be prepared, and good to run over scenarios from time to time. That's what our training is all about - it doesn't take much to grab a tank and blow bubbles, but our training prepares us for the other scenarios that might unfold. A member here (Thal?) mentioned glittering...

    Renting gauges and octo?

I just bought a set of regs from my local shop, and tossed them the SPG I had bought online. They had no problems installing it for me. Now that I've got it home, I realized I forgot to have them install the inflator hose. No problem, I busted out the hex wrench set and put the inflator hose on...

    local dives

Howdy! Welcome to ScubaBoard and diving in general! :) This forum's been pretty slow, so my apologies for such a delayed response. Who did you get your OW certs with? I think just about every outfit around here has dive-alongs for you to attend, and buddies can be found. IMO, if you're fresh...
