Is there a "hardest cert/most stringent certifier?"

My fundies anecdote: I got a provisional pass 4 years ago. I needed a better valve drill To get a full pass. It turns out that I have PFO, so I decided to get bent rather than finish the course. This was 2 months after the course. (It was walking my twin-set up a hill after the dive that caused...

    Aliens in the Deep

That is a stunning video. I enjoyed it a lot. I'll have to check out the other parts.

Why should warm water divers consider the UK?

Dive the UK, coz that's the way it is. Huh!

Why is it so hard to thumb a dive?

Interesting article. Behavioural economics is a very interesting area, and I suspect it can give insights into quite a few areas. I thumbed a dive at the bottom of the shot for the first time last Saturday. It was pitch black with maybe 1m visibility, and relatively deep by my standards...

What is the future of GUE?

I am definitely not a senior GUE diver. However, some anecdotal evidence is provided by my BSAC club. In the last year and a half, 4 of us have taken Fundies. One has gone on to pass Tech 1. So, in the UK at least, GUE clearly still has quite a strong appeal. There were already other GUE divers...

    Dive computers... SO many choices!

If I put my (very old) Suunto D4 in freediving mode, it "locks out" for 48 hours after a dive. It's not a genuine lock out, in that it still functions in this period in gauge mode on dives. However, I can't access its RGBM algorithms while this happens. (On a side note, I believe this computer...

Close call in the dressing room

My buddy got his drysuit back from service earlier this year. On buddy checking on the boat, he spotted a second inflator where the dump should be. Undeterred, he still jumped in. To ascend, he improvised an American up-line (he put the reel around the wreck, and did a controlled foot-first...

Newbie issues. What is your dive problems stats?

If I feel stressed, I ask myself three questions: 1. Breathing. Do I have safe gas to breathe? 2. Buoyancy. Am I naturally buoyant? 3. Buddy. Is my buddy near? If the answer to any is no, I have something to sort out. If all three questions are good, then slowing down and relaxing will sort...

    Hello from UK

Hello! Do you normally shore dive, or go from a boat? I've always meant to dive in Norfolk - I am originally from Norwich. (Most of my diving is South coast.)

Truth Aquatics Aug. 2016 Trip Report - California

Thanks for the write up. I'm likely to spend some time in San Diego next year for other reasons, and I'm looking to get some diving in as well. One issue I'm struggling is whether to bring my drysuit - I prefer it for cold water stuff, but it is likely to mess up my luggage allowance.

Is there a "hardest cert/most stringent certifier?"

I am also a BSAC diver (although I also have cards from PADI and TDI; and I'm doing Fundies very soon). I agree with Diving Dubai's post. As with all things, the quality of training will vary from instructor to instructor. But, in general, the system produces thinking divers well suited for...

Should I log swimming pool dives?

I actually got the 34.5 from wiki rather than my logs, because I'm lazy. I'll check when I get back from work what my computer gave. I thought it was deeper than 33, but I may have mis-remembered. 98% of my diving is in the sea, and so my computer is calibrated to salt water. I never bother...

Should I log swimming pool dives?

I did indeed find Nemo, just for one day.

Should I log swimming pool dives?

I have logged 2 pool dives. They were both to 34.5 metres, so deeper than an average pool dip.

    Recreational doubles

My apporach is similar to River's - I use twin 12s for most of my diving. However, I'll move to single tank for rib diving, as well as shore diving and pool stuff. Twinsets are useable on a rib, but a single is more straighforward.

    Deep Stops Increases DCS

I may be missing the point, but aren't Ross's chart and the heat maps similar? The big differences between VPM-B+3 and GF60/75 in the heat maps are the tissue loadings post surfacing. In Ross's chart, the supersaturation of the most heavily loaded compartment seems to be 55 KPA on surfacing...

    Deep Stops Increases DCS

Hi Ross Are your charts dependent on the tissue compartment under consideration? I would expect the super-saturation to vary significantly over time for a slow compartment compared to a fast compartment, for example. Cheers
