Gear check for the wife? Does this sound reasonable?

I think the selene wing is the women's version of my BC, and I've found TUSA's AWLS weighting system a bit dicky. It's a great latching system if you triple check it, but I have had 6lbs of lead self ditch. It's quite difficult to get a weight pocket in while wearing the BC, especially...

    New aircraft =shorter fly time?

Would you base the air pressure on the expected cabin pressure, the plane's actual altitude, or split the difference? My concern wouldn't be so much flying in an aircraft pressurised to 6000 feet after a series of no stop dives, it would be a worst case scenario where the aircraft lost cabin...

    Maybe strange question? Sinking legs

Not just you. I recently spend a week diving in Thailand and really struggled for trim. I kept finding myself floating head up and was having to concentrate to hold a hover with my fins off the reef. I took over my usual BC, boots and fins, only variable was wearing my 3mm suit. As soon as I...

    Diving goals for next year

I'd like to finish the year with a lot more dives and really get on top of my navigation. My sense of direction underwater is dreadful. I'd like to work towards becoming a DM down the track but that's not probably not a 2015 thing. I want the experience of completing the program as much as...

    What did Santa bring you?

My mother in law got me freediving fins. Well actually she gave me a dive shop voucher, but I told her she got me awesome new fins. They've been out three times so far. First dive I found a bunch of big rays and my wife found us a 4 foot long Wobbegong (carpet shark in the rest of the world)...

    Why Aren't There Scuba Celebrities?

Sports stars become famous when they push and exceed their own limitations and those of their chosen sport. Stronger, faster higher and all that. Divers who take that approach seldom make headlines, just a brief mention in the legal notices after the inquest.

    Maybe its just me

Yeah I read it as the threadstarter having been denied dives deeper than 18m and not able to rent nitrox tanks due to the basic OW ticket. It is a little ambiguous as to what qualifies as "deep"

    Maybe its just me

AOW is hardly difficult to get. Little expensive sure, but this is an expensive hobby. If your concern is that a dive op won't take you deep without the cert, then get them to take you deep and call it a training dive, get it signed off and it's sorted. It might seem like an annoying exercise...

Buddy checks - formal v. informal

Swiss cheese model - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Interesting to see how in the incident described, they didn't just miss one check, they screwed them all up in sequence. BCD, Weights, Releases, Air. Getting just one of those things right would have arrested the slide.

PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy - worth doing?

I did mine as part of my AOW course in Tulamben, Bali. One of the exercises, which I didn't see the value of till I tried it, was to hover with your face right next to the cleaner shrimp station. Take your reg out and the shrimp will crawl onto your face and pick your teeth clean. You need to...

    Weightbelt as waist strap

Brings us back to the argument about ditchable weight. I guess if your dive plan doesn't allow for dumping weight, then it doesn't really matter whether you have lead blocks threaded onto your harness or have it all concentrated in a heavy steel backplate. I don't think anyone would do this...

Snorkeling while on a "surface interval"

Depends how easily distracted you are by things on the bottom I guess. I snorkel more than I dive, and I'm constantly ducking down a few metres to check out things below. I took my girlfriend snorkelling between my own dives once, and it was pretty frustrating being stuck on the surface not...

Who carries dive accident evacuation insurance?

I never saw the need for insurance when I was shore diving 20 minutes away from a free public hospital with a chamber. I got DAN insurance to dive in Indonesia earlier this year, and I will keep it up to date since it's not a bad idea to have it diving at home in Australia. We get hyperbaric...

Washington bans on the taking of octopus at popular dive sites

Did anyone interpret the title as Washington banning octopus regs from popular sites? I knew those GUE nazis in the northwest were keen on primary donate and old school buddy breathing, but I thought that was taking it a little far.

Wearing a snorkel in a pond

I'm PADI trained, I'm wearing a snorkel right now. Also a mask, I'm afraid if I push it up off my face people will think I'm drowning.

What do you do with your keys?

Yeah I did something similar, I took an old key and removed the immobiliser and remote fob so I've just got the steel key to open the door and I can leave my immobiliser keys in the car. My 3mm suit has a key pocket inside it, if I'm diving in my 7mm I leave the key in my speedos.

    Cleaning oily residue from gear

If it's just oil, it's probably no worse for you than getting a bit greasy working on your car. Sounds like there might be some unknowns on what else you're swimming in though. Edit, just checked and old dirty oil is actually carcinogenic amongst other things. I should probably stop handling...

    Bloody nose after diving

I got a nose bleed on the last dive of my OW, I couldn't see myself but when the group surfaced everyone else was like "ooh that's nasty". I must have had a fair bit of blood in my mask. My instructor assured me that it just happens sometimes, and 20 dives later It hasn't happened again...

    Storm Damage @ USAT Liberty?

The coral encrusted guns were certainly an iconic image of Tulamben, I'm glad I got to see the in May this year while they were still in place. The night dive on the wreck is still one of the coolest things I've done underwater.

    Nitrox without dive computer?

It seems my sense of humour is a little abrasive. I have replaced my response with this kitten.
