Has SCUBA training gone too far?

Pretty much sums it up for me. In my experience many of the Specialty Certs that I see Divers (after seeing how they dive) carrying around aren't worth the plastic they're printed on.

How do you get pool time?

Try a Hotel/ Resort that has a pool. Befriend the Manager maybe they can help you out. I did this years ago to test some DIY gear. I work at a Pool now so I get all the pool time I want ( some days more than I want).

    shallow solo question

My rules for Solo Diving: *Always tell someone where I'm diving and when I'll be back. *Never dive with faulty/ shotty or unfamiliar gear. *Always have a backup (pony bottle ,twins, stage bottle) *Do the homework -know the site, hazards and conditions.Have an Emergency plan. *Know my...

Article: Gas analysis - Keeping yourself safe while diving

I get my fills from a buddy who runs a Commercial outfit. Not that I don't want to support my LDS but I've have too many issues over the years with fills. My Buddy relies on his air for his crew and operations. Even if he didn't have to have it tested - he still would. Of course I throw in some...

Article: The Fate of The U-869 Reexamined, by John Chatterton, Richie Kohler, and John Yurga

Thanks for the post. I read read Shadow Divers a few years back and enjoyed remembering the exciting read that it was. I might actually try and find and read it again. I'm sure that it is buried somewhere in my mess.

Is it worth getting your DM certification for the education?

Like most others, I took my Divemaster enroute to becoming an Instructor. Since then (I haven't taught in ten years) I hardly ever show my DM card - especially on Commercial Charters.( Now I'm wondering where my DM card is...hmmm):dontknow: My wife took her DM with me some eighteen years ago...

Solo diving and back-zip dry suit?

Any proficient Diver will alter/ experiment with their gear to figure out how to make it work for their situation. I've attached a lanyard to my drysuit and I'm always aware or creat locations where I can hook up and open & close my zipper. Even before I was a Solo Diver I often had to "run...

    Do you Need a Snorkel

I have a snorkel in my gear cache just incase but I don't usually wear one. I don't find it gets in the way - it's just one less thing hanging off of me waiting to get snagged while crawling through tight spots. Back in the day I used to teach the students to attach a cylum stick to their...

    Communicating Underwater

For Commercial applications nothing beats a good set of comms but I tend to agree with most of the post here that when I dive recreationally I don't want to hear someone elses voice. When my Wife was still diving she had a way of letting me know what she was thinking without words or hand...

I'm not concerned. . .but should I be?

Just to restate what has already been said:Get a good knowledge of Dive Tables and use them. Even if you always plan on diving with a computer knowing your tables can save your life if something goes wrong. Always check your gear the best you can (get your buddy to help) after you hit the...

    AOW curriculum/value??

First off I want to say that it's great that you and your wife are experiencing these adventures together. My wife and I took our OW, AOW and Rescue together and enjoyed the journey together. She enrolled in the DM course with me but had to drop out half way through due to a Medical Condition...

Drysuits - Things to look for

Wow! I guess I should be looking for a new suit. It really comes down to what kind of Diving you do and how you take care of your gear. I have two suits- an old Brooks Seal suit, so far I've only had to replace the kneepads and one wrist seal- Pretty good suit for 15 yrs.old. The other is a...
