Would this be a fail? It depends…
If the student did everything right but was unable to recover the reg because it got snagged on the tank strap behind his back and grabbed the octo instead - PASS but I’ll still get them to try again until they are confident they can do it.
If the student did...
Yes it has a compass, but as far as I can tell from the manual you can't view it while in dive mode, only on land for use on a run/hike etc.
Here are the instructions for accessing the compass above water:
To use bearing navigation without exercising:
Scroll to Map by swiping up or pressing...
But my personal underwater navigation occasionally requires a compass.
I don’t really think the feature really should be called inertial navigation for this computer since you can’t use it for actual navigation. More like inertial route recording for later viewing.
Yes, I’d go for the Hydros again. Not perfect, but the integrated weights are just so much better than the “sure loss” ones.
If only some manufacturer would combine the best features of those two BCDs.
Exactly. I’m not located near the OP but would only teach a 10 year old on Backplate and wing if it was sized appropriately and supported her at the surface at least as well as our shop’s XXS sized rental BCDs.
Also a heavy steel backplate might overweight a small child in a warm freshwater...
A free flow, even with a cloud of bubbles, should not cause you to rise up. The more air bubbles rising around you the less water their is to provide buoyancy. In an extreme case, this could cause you to sink instead of rise. The rise was most likely caused by tunnel vision, only thinking about...
Club Med Turquoise in Turks and Caicos. They have their own dive boat ( I was in a room less than 120 steps to the boat) , good diving and most importantly lots and lots for my non diving wife to do while I went diving.
Many computers have terrible interfaces impossible to use without the manual, others are simplicity itself.
A terrible example is the Suunto Zoop Novo. Out shop rents these and I have to get out the manual or a demo app on my phone to set it for Nitrox.
A great example is the Suunto Eon Core...
Make sure you get a computer that you can read easily. The large, lit color screens like on the Peregrine are much easier to read than smaller monochrome screens.
If you have perfect close vision and youthful eyes you can ignore the above.
One good thing about the arctic - it stands up to use and washing well. Mine has around 500 dives and probably 80 machine washes on it and is still going strong.
The most common way to lock a zoop novo is to dive with it in gauge mode. Spend a bit of time learning the mode switches so you can avoid that.
Our shop rental computers are always being set to gauge mode by free divers using them (or by mistake) so I've trained myself to always check they are...
There is no requirement for boat dives in a PADI DM course. Many parts of the world have great shore diving. My DM course was only shore dives at 4 separate sites 3 of which had multiple distinct areas to dive. (plus lots of time in the pool)
Mine was significantly longer than 2 weekends though.
I'd recommend the computer vs blind trust in the guide/DM.
Most guides I've met are very conservative (Including me, when I guide) but I've had at least one guide over the years not deserving of the trust. With him, I stayed several meters above most of the group, and was still on the edge of...
It may be the camera angle but those fins look huge compared to your body.
Perhaps try fins with a smaller blade. Less force against you when you kick.
I personally prefer smaller blades on my fins, but can still kick faster than most divers on those rare occasions when needed.
