    Toss DUI boots?

I hate to be the dissenting voice, but.... I did 3 dives with the rock boots. Didn't like 'em. They come untied, the knots in the laces seize after being wet, and worst of all, TOO MUCH FIDDLING ABOUT! I'll keep my space boots, thank you very much....shloop shloop zip, let's go.

    Pulmonary Oxygen toxicity

I had an interesting question the other night.... We all know that Pulmonary toxicity starts to impair lung function after about 600 minutes, and severe breakdown at about 24 hrs (correct me if I'm wrong, I've never approached these numbers while breathing pure O2) What about at lower...

    Waterlogging of skin

Thank you for the explanation. What effects will prolonged periods in the water have? Say, 60 hours?

    Waterlogging of skin

Some friends and I were discussing the effects of water on skin. We were wondering what makes skin wrinkle in water, and what the effects of prolonged exposure to water would be. Has anyone ever done research on prolonged submersion and its dermal effects? Does one become "waterlogged" as was...

    Time to total saturation

I would like to know what the algorithm/ formula to find out time to total saturation at a given depth. The tissue model I'm using is the Buhlmann ZL-16, but while I can find equations for no-stop times, calculating tissue half-times, and calculating decompression times for tissue, what I...

    Did I wreck my reg?

Make sure that the spg gets removed and dried out, preferably near a heat source. The concern is that large amounts of water start corroding the brass bourdon tube in the spg, and the verdigris (green corrosion) blocks the tube, making the spg read incorrectly. It can also weaken the tube...

    Servicing Apeks regs.

I can't speak for the US, but here in Canada, Aqua Lung said that any aqua lung/seaquest/apeks/usd dealer should be able to service an Apeks reg. The parts are available to any dealer. And yes, the design of the legend is very similar, but a little lighter. Legend is an awesome breathing reg...

    dry gloves

Gotta recommend the BARE retro fit system. 400 dives and counting, no problems

Can you comfortably bring your knee up to your chest in your drysuit?

I'm currently diving a BARE next gen. It's a rental, until my CD4 arrives. It's a very dry suit (natch!) with strong seams and good seals. Seems to take all the punishment I dish out. HOWEVER, I find the cut leaves a bit to be desired. I feel like I'm diving in a giant sausage casing...

    Donning drysuit

Another thing to try is "newt juice" or anything like it. It's for wakeboard and waterski bindings. My LDS stocks watersports equipment, and the newt juice comes in a spray bottle for about half of the cost of a tube of ky. less mess, more convenient, and it conditions the seals. gl

    Yup, another Canadian

Ah, the joys of being under the ice. You would not believe the life or the viz. Absolutely recommended. My tough choice this year is Frobisher Bay or the Galapagos......

    Poll...what kind of weight integration?

I'm in a quandary as to what BCD to get... The shop I work for says I have to wear what we sell, so I'm down to either an Apeks or a Seaquest Raider. I like the construction of the Apeks, but I'm not sure I like the dual ripcord weight release, esp for teaching. I've not laid eyes on a...

    balanced diaphragm vs. balanced piston

Joost my two cents, but on the "piston corrosion" issue.... I service an awful lot of regs, diaphragm and piston both. I have only ever seen one piston reg corroded to the point of not working...It was an old Mk 10 left unrinsed in a small puddle of seawater for >3 yrs (said seawater was...

Dive Knife...Did I get ripped off??

I'm a knife collector, and I think you did alright. Remember that titanium is *softer* than most stainless, so when you sharpen it, do so carefully. They are nice 'cuz they don't rust. But some types dull very fast...depends on the alloy and manufacturing technique. My new dive knife is...

    mixing 1st and 2nd stages

No....the vaunted reliability of apeks is due largely to their overboosted first stage design Any decent 2nd with heatsinks and tunability would perform as well in most cases. The best reason to mix and match is to get that great 1st stage, and then a 2nd with superior comfort , exhaust...

    balanced diaphragm vs. balanced piston

I agree, not an issue. What is more interesting, when is piston superior and when is diaphragm superior?

    Hallooo out there

Hi there, I'm a PDI MSDT who was very active several years ago on the Compuserve diving forum. I've been living abroad, without computer contact (gee, what happened to windows 3.11 for networks?) and now I'm back in the fold. I'm a professional tech for gear, with all the bells and...
