I'd recommend renting a bunch of gear first. Find out works for you and the kind of diving you want to do and try out a lot of different brands.

I'd recommend the Zeagle Envoy as an entry-level reg.. Atomic makes great regs too. The scubapro regs are solid but pricey and hard to find discounted.

There was a recent thread on using freediving suits for scuba. The general consensus seemed to be it's not a good idea. Difficulty of donning and easier compressibility were the main reasons IIRC
