How cold is too cold for wetsuits?

Spoken like someone who hasn't done much wet diving in cold water. :shakehead: I wear a full body 7mm jumper with 5mm hood in Chicago in water well into the 40's without any problems. Yes the suits compress, but "self-collapsing behemoth suits" is a ludicrous overstatement. I also have had...

You could too! All are welcome! ;)

    Got C - Card - but...

Porsche - As others here have said, the Y certification is recognized just as widely, if not more so, than the NAUI cert. Considering what you mentioned about the instructor giving you extra attention (and conforming to the higher standards set by YMCA), I would say you got a bargain, paying...

Hey folks! Just wanted to put word out there that on Wednesday, November 14, the Chicago Aquanauts Scuba Association will welcome Cris Kohl as the guest speaker at our monthly meeting. CASA meets at Mr. Beef & Pizza, 1796 S. Elmhurst Road in Mount Prospect, on the second Wednesday night of...

    Tammy from SC

Greetings! Belize and Bonaire were my last two trips! Where in Belize are you going? Diving was outstanding everywhere we went (except, arguably, the Blue Hole ;) ) Got back from Bonaire a few weeks ago. Stayed a week at Buddy Dive. Going back sometime next year, thanks to a prize...

    Hello - new to scubaboard

If you haven't dived in 7 years, and your only diving experince prior to now was your OW cert course, I would highly recommend you do a refresher course. If you did your training locally, check with the shop that did your training. They may let you retake the course for free. A lot changes...

    Got C - Card - but...

Just one point to raise here, as it is unclear from your original post... You do realize that NAUI, PADI, and YMCA are all separate certifying agencies, correct? That PADI and YMCA re not the same thing? What is important is the training you received and the knowledge you picked up, but...

Help with a fish I.D. please.......

Slender filefish has my vote too! Saw a few of them in Bonaire earlier this month, and had one follow me on ascent from a night dive in Bonaire in 2005. Cool critters, usually see them at night...

Giant Squid caught on video, History Channel

I didn't see the trailer before... I don't know about you, Arch, but if they are saying they found a 108 ft humboldt, I say they better have some good support for that....guess I'll have to wait and see the IMAX....

Giant Squid caught on video, History Channel

Giant Squid is Archeteuthus. That isn't what you encountered in the Sea of Cortez. What you have there is a Humboldt Squid. Not the same thing. Humboldt Squid are encountered pretty regularly. Giant Squid (and their cousins Colossal Squid) are rarely to never encountered. To my knowledge...

    Thumbs Up/Down?

When I first got indoctrinated into this sport of ours 20 years ago this year, what I was taught was that you point your thumb where you want people to go, and you point your index finger where you want them to look. "Thumbs Up" didn't have anything to do with thumbs up...it had to do with...

    Anyone tried Seabob?

great....Siltmaster 2000 with the optional Green Laser Pointer of Death....any takers on a pool for how qualified this guy was to be doing wreck penetration on a single tank with no redundancy?

    Attacked by a Reef?

This sounds nearly identical to my wife's run-in with fire coral years ago. During her second flare-up, she contacted DAN for advice. Their recommendation was a hot compress. She used that treatment and within days, the irritation went away and never recurred.

    Top 10 dive sites

Hmmm....if your complaint is that Cozumel should be higher on the list than anything in Belize, then either you didn't dive the same Cozumel as I did, or you didn't dive the same Belize.... Granted, the Blue Hole would not be the Belize site I would choose....The Elbow was much more my style....

    Record Mako Caught...

Interesting part of this story is that these guys weren't even going for sharks. They were targeting Grouper and instead got themselves a record Mako. I don't like seeing sharks die, but under the circumstances, I can't really fault these guys. They caught themselves a record fish during a...

    Anyone tried Seabob?

Small point here, but I didn't see anyone in that video on SCUBA. They were all doing breathhold. Kind of hard to get bent or an overexpansion injury on a breathhold dive. That said, equalizing would probably be tough, given the speed and the fact that you have to hold on with both hands...

    Klein Curacao Trip Report

Interesting....I dove Curacao (but didn't go to Klein) in 2001, and have a hard time imagining anything being boring under the waves around that island. You seem disappointed with the sand flats. I sometimes find the most interesting stuff on my dives there. Without sand flats, we don't get...

Who has NEVER had something stolen in Bonaire?

Ok, ok....I voted no here earlier as a smart *****, since I had not (yet) been to the island. However, I have just returned from my first trip there, and I can honestly say it is a beautiful island and I never felt any danger so long as reasonable precautions were taken. All of the islanders I...
