    My near-miss in the Galapagos

LeeAnn, Thanks for posting in such detail and answering and updating with so many posts after that. I'm very thankful your BCD didn't blow out while you were at depth at Gordon Rocks and you didn't panic when you were OOA. I know you've learned your lesson (I've learned mine from just reading...

Bunaken video including baby whale shark

Wow, that's indeed the smallest whaleshark I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing. I hope to dive Bunaken with TFD next June/July (planning ahead already).

    Lightest Reg for Travel

i agree with almightywife's post above. You can shave perhaps 1+ pound off the weight of a 1st stage if you go Titanium. If you really want to, you can look into Scubapro, Oceanic and Atomic and several other reputable companies that make good Ti versions of their ordinary regs. Personally, I'd...

    Safety Stop entertainment

I usually do a neutral buoyancy check (if my tank is nearly empty), equipment check - see if anything has gotten loose (something to fix in between dives) and occasionally (if I warn my buddy beforehand) we practice out of air drill. On boat dives, while hanging onto the bar for the safety...

Best way to store my gear?

Good suggestions posted already. I second storing them in an air-tight bag or container, away from light and extremes in temperatures. My bedroom/living room are ideal places for storage. And do hang the wetsuits so they don't get permanent creases, which reduce their lifespan.

    Atomic B2 issue??!!

I own the Atomic B2 and I've had similar fears as well. According to my diveshop rep who sold me the reg, so long as the dustcap is on and they quickly dunk it in and get it out quickly, very little water will get past the seat. Most of the dive ops and liveaboards I've dived with in the US or...

    Newbie gear questions

Hi Shaun, Welcome to the board and good luck getting certified :-) I agree with hokie-diver - don't purchase gear till after you get certified. That said, the setup you mentioned is great for tropical rec diving (I started with Oceanic gear), but if you're doing deep and tech, then BP and wings...

    Computer Recomendations?

Hi GrumpyOldGuy, if you'e thinking of nitrox, I'd definitely get a nitrox capable computer (only cost a little more than air only ones) or else you'll have to buy an new computer once you get certified. I agree with one of the posters above that air-integrated computers cost too much and I...

Stand-alone wrist mount SPG for backup???

I guess my question is if your computer dies suddenly during a dive, are you looking for a back-up to continue diving, or are you just looking for something to allow you to make a safe ascent? In my opinion, if your answer is the 1st, then you'd probably need a 2nd computer. If it's just to make...

How often do you service your pony regulator?

As CheekyMonkey said, if it's a back-up the diver counts on, then i think it should get serviced according to manufacturer's recommendations (annually for my Oceanic pony reg). The rules for maintaining the primary reg should apply to the pony reg as well, even if one doesn't use it at all...

Should a second stage always be attached to air before even light rinsing?

I used to dunk my regs (with dust cap firmly screwed shut) in a bathtub/bucket after each dive. After I bought an Atomic reg I'm more careful as instructions say water can get into the 2nd stage if it is not pressurized. I have a pony tank, so I leave the reg attached and pressurized and soak...

Stand-alone wrist mount SPG for backup???

Highdesert, aside from the dive watch with depth indicator suggested above, my suggestions for an accurate and reliable redundant depth-measuring device are either: (1) a simple back-up wrist computer (digital), generally under $250, less if you buy used, or (2) a depth gauge module (analog)...

    My UW Journey In Tioman!

Nice pics as always, Edvin. Seriously, you should consider compiling and publishing your works as a book, such as Andrea Ferrari 's "A Diver's Guide to Underwater Malaysia Macrolife", Mark D. Spalding's "World Atlas of Coral Reefs" or Michael Aw's "Dreams from a Rainbow Sea". Your pics are that...

Dive Rite Venture wing or Trek wing?

Very good deal at Dive Rite Express indeed. Back to OP: I dive single (and occasionally with a pony). I, too, was deliberating on whether I needed the Trek wings, but I went with Venture since I'll never be diving doubles. I've had over 20 dives on the Venture wings now - it's not that big, so...

Can't afford Strobe! Would a headlamp help?

I agree with Larry C, drift diving in Cozumel means you'd hardly have a chance to stop & make adjustments, unless you're in the swim thrus (too dark anyway) or behind a coral ledge shlelded from the current. But on a sunny day, with sunlight at proper angle and if you're shallow (30ft or less)...

What do you find to be the most user friendly dive computers

I agree, Oceanic wins for large letters, SmartGlo and user friendliness (including detailed manual, intuitive button functions) - I have owned several wrist models, from the Prodigy to the Veos. Performance of computer is another issue - for me it is the ability to switch to a second gas mix on...

    Advice on oceanic gear

Good package. My first set of gear was all Oceanic - Oceanic dive gear is known for their reliability, clear user manuals (especially for computers) and their hard to beat price. My dive buddy uses the OceanPro BCD. It's a good warmwater BCD, very comfortable (I'm not sure if it has enough lift...

    Need help with packing gear

Excellent idea, Diver Dennis. i will do this on my next trip. Back to original post. It does look like a difficult task "jamming" these all into your carry-ons. Also, there's always a possibility they may gate-check your carry-on pullman - sometimes they tell you you're flying on a bigger jet...

The absolute minimum to bring when traveling

I agree with you. I'd add mask and fins that fit. The rest one can rent. Several dive ops I know (although they are still in the minority) are providing computers with rentals or making divers rent a computer if they don't have one. If these divers you DMed did not own computers, I'm guessing...
