Ear pain...Should I take the plunge?

When I went to the top of the Sears tower to the observation deck on the 100th floor or whatever it was, a few people had ear pains from the elevator right and were told to pop their ears or stretch there jaws or chew gum to get through it. It's not all that uncommon for people to have ear...

Ear pain...Should I take the plunge?

First 15 feet or so is the worst, once I get equalized at that point I'm pretty much OK for the rest of the way down. Most other people are the same. I start clearing my ears a few days before I dive just to get losened up, then I take sudafed before I actually go diving so I'm not...

    Accident waiting to happen

Some type of an underwater gate could stop them I'd think. When you really think about it, it wouldn't have to be much of a gate. A diver can't get through an arrea smaller than what? 2' by 2'? So fabricate some type of metal barred gate taking that into consideration with wide openings...

    PADI or SSI

Why don't you take SSI and your buddy can take PADI, then you can compare notes and take away what both courses offer. Personally, I already have my SSI OW and AOW, and soon will have nitrox... but I'd like to get a PADI cert under my belt sometime just for the recognizable card. (Not that...

    Quarry trained Divers

RJP, you don't exactly train a newbie diver in those conditions either though. Isn't that a dive you would have to work up to experience wise? Don't think it'd be a first time out after the good ol' OW type of deal.

    Whats next?

You still breath the same amount of gas, wether it be normal air or nitrox. And when you breath that same amount down to 500lbs or whatever it is you turn back on, then you're done. The advantage of nitrox is, it gives you longer bottoms times. Remember your tables from OW class that said...

OOA Buddy starts to drag you up by your octo - What would you do?

If I made it to the surface and didn't get bent, I'd still stab the guy in the cheek with my blunt knife for trying to kill me.

Weighting + rental gear, bouancy + 7.2L lungs

Rental gear shouldn't effect you too much. I figure the worst case scenario, you have to add more weight, or possibly remove some before your second dive. Short shallow breaths can lead to hyperventilation and panic which is why they don't recommend it. You don't have to take in deep slow...

    Annual inspection cost

I dont recall the prices at mine, but I know for people that bought their regs at my LDS (as opposed to somewhere else), get a hefty discount.

    embarrassing novice question

The hardest part for me was opening my eyes while wet without rubbing them first... which was not really a problem at all, just something I noticed when I was first doing mask clearing.

How many dives did you have when you did AOW

You're taking all the specialties seperatly? I spent a few hundred bucks and took 4 specialties at once to get my AOW. (night/limited vis, deep diving, boat diving, and nav)

How many dives did you have when you did AOW

SSI actually recommends in their reading material that you take Rescue right after OW, before anything else.
  17. plot

How many dives did you have when you did AOW

24, SSI required amount of dives for actually getting your AOW. Although, you can take the class before then, just won't get the card until you've reached 24 dives.

    Purchasing own equipment online/lds?

The shops around here seem to push through a pretty low volume in merchandise. I realize they're running on razor thin profit margins, but I'd forego my equipment sales profits and compete with the internet prices, and focus on selling my trips, training, more training, customer service, repeat...

I'm paying retail for equipment from LDS

Price fixing is when ALL vendors of a particular product do it. Like if ALL the cable tv and satalite tv companies got togethor and decided on a minimum price to charge their customers. Aqualung and Scubapro can dictate prices for their own equipment, but if they got togethor ALL of the...
