Hi, I am planning a trip to Malaysia for my husband and I. I plan to have a week in Borneo (not sure where yet, I would like to see the orangutan's, any advise much appreciated!!!) and then a week diving. I've heard so many great things about Sipadan and have tried researching but there is so much information that I find it confusing! :(
Where would the best place be to stay? I know there are passes to dive sipadan but which would be the best place to stay to give us the best chance for these passes also a place where the diving is still good if we dont get chance to dive sipadan?
I am planning this trip for April but i'm concerned it could be busy around Easter and therefore harder to get passes. Has anybody been around April time? Or alternitavely when would be the best time to go?
Any other information on where to stay in Borneo/trip idea's would be appreciated, I'm really struggling on planning this trip
Thank you!

Hi...you can see orangutans at the Sepilok Rehab Center, but it was even more special to see them in the wild...check out lodges around Sukau/Kinabatangan, or even better, try to arrange a stay at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge in the Danum Valley..pricy, but a very special place, for wild orang encounters. I'm not an expert on Sipadan, but have been twice, staying at SMART and at Seaventures, both of which I enjoyed and are of a similar price range. I've never been at Easter, but was there during a simiilarly busy time period last year (Chinese New Year) and got three passes when I stayed then at Seaventures.

Let's try to get you some answers..

1) It is not as bad as some people make it out to be about diving at sipadan with the permit situation. I don't know anyone who has not managed to get at least a half day's diving with 3-4 dives in who has stayed in the area..I know more people who have gotten 2-3 days at Sipadan but it also depends how many day's you stay out there. You won't get exclusively 2 full days at sipadan if you're there for say, 3D2N but probably 1 (or rather half a day/3-4 dives which is the norm)...or maybe 2 if its a 4D/3N or 5D4N trip. Don't panic and don't let some people on here who have a habit of making it sound worse than it actually is with the permit situation.

The introduction of the permits was done for a good reason.

2) There is no guarranteed locations in the bush where you will see genuine orang utans that is known to outsiders, unless you are a wild life officer who is involved in the orang utan rehabilition program. Otherwise, locations and stuff are kept confidential for obvious reasons.

You can view orang utans at the rehabilitation sanctuary in Sandakan (sepilok) and your contribution towards the entrance fee helps the wild life department care/rehabilitate orphan young orang utans who need a lot of care and attention for a wild life department that is working over time to keep this operation successful.

3) Kinabatangan is a must. Try the famed Cede Prudente (famed borneo photographer/national geo) lodge's (goggle him and check out his lodge at sepilok and also at the kinabatangan) or uncle tan's which has a hardcore following (extremely basic..don't expect luxury here) as these are 2 proven destinations amongst regulars who head out into the bush to catch if you're lucky elephants and other wild life along the river banks of the Kinabatangan.

4) Sipadan area accomodation. There are 4 star dive centers, 3 star dive centers, a modified oil rig and budget homestay accomodations to choose from and to cater for your budget. It depends WHAT you expect and WHAT you want for your stay.

April is fine. Go ahead and book but the number of dives you get at sipadan depends on the lenght of your stay.

Except for January/February and maybe September/October, Sipadan is pretty much packed all year round anyways...

Kapalai Resort on an atoll 20 minutes from Sipadan gets consistently top ratings but is expensive. Borneo diver is on mabul island, also 20 minutes from sipadan and gets good, consistent ratings with chalets on the island...or if you want to try something different, check out seaventures oil rig which, for what it is, is actually interesting and has gotten good ratings in 2011 on tripadvisors.com

There are a couple of other top end chalet/resorts on mabul worth checking out but they are on the same level cost wise as Kapalai. I personally perfer Kapalai because of their no rubbish policy (i.e they actually ferry out all their trash back to the mainland) and because it just continues to impress many people who visit Kapalai.

But spend some time, do some research on tripadvisors.com on the resorts out there before you make a decision. If you are coming out to Borneo for a solid diving experince, I would hang out no less than 5 days 4 nights and try to get in 2 days at least at sipadan...and a lot of people actually stay on beyond 5 days and into 10 days or more..its quite normal.

I think this is the gizz of what you wanted to know, correct?

I just got back from Sipadan last week. The diving around Sipadan was amazing, easily the best diving I have ever done and I have been to the Maldives, Indonesia, thailand and Philippines. So much to see, every dive had something different with sharks and turtles being a constant on every dive. The diving around Mabul was better than I expected as I am not a big macro diver, but we still saw lots of turtles, squid mating, seahorse (regular and pigmy), and a lot of different creatures, many that I never saw before.
I stayed at Mabul Water Bungalows (part of SMART resort), it was expensive, but from what I saw and heard of other resorts, this is definetly the best resort in the Area, but since it has two resorts, the land and water bungalows, getting to Sipadan is not guaranteed unless you stay one week, and then you are only guaranteed one day. SMART and the water bungalows is at an extreme disadvantage for Sipadan permits, we were there at the end of CNY and if we were not willing to pay five times the regular price (about 75usd), it would have been possible that we did not get out to sipadan at all. Luckily the night before our last day diving, I asked the manager about it and she told me if there was a cancellation I could have a shot, but other than that, I was out of luck. Luckily somebody cancelled last minute and I was on the 5:30 boat to Sipadan. Out of the four nights (three days diving) I was able to get to Sipdan for two days (7 dives). I was quite shocked with the amount of people who went to Sipadan that not only did not even dive, but could not even swim while divers were begging to get out there. If you are very clear with the staff that you want sipadan everyday, they will do whatever they can. All the staff is very friendly, although sometimes it is hard to find somebody if you want something from the souvenier shop or from the bar, but they are usually not too far away.
Seaventures, Mataking and Celebes Sea Explorer have the best chance of going to Sipadan, these resorts sell their extra permits to places like SMART, so you would have a much better chance of diving Sipdan if you stayed at one of these places. Problem is, I have heard Mataking is about 80 minutes by boat to Sipadan. Celebes Sea Explorer, is a liveaboard and that is not for everybody. Seaventurers is supposed to be one of the lower quality hotels, and while we were on the boat back to Sipadan Island after our second dive, we picked up three of their divers that were lost at sea, easily a mile away from their dive boat (i dont see how any operation can let that happen).
I think next time, I may try Mataking as they seemed to be selling permits to SMART everyday, so in theory, you should be able to dive Sipadan everyday. Im willing to take the 80 mintue boat ride for that.

Where would the best place be to stay?

That depends on your budget and preferences. There is a range from 5* Spa Resorts ($$$$$) down to communal dorm rooms ($) and everything in-between. All can provide, or arrange scuba diving for you.

I know there are passes to dive sipadan but which would be the best place to stay to give us the best chance for these passes also a place where the diving is still good if we dont get chance to dive sipadan?

Passes are divided between the dive operations. Book early and specify/book the Sipidan dives at that time.

You should note that most dive operations class Sipidan as an intermediate-advanced level dive. Few will take you there directly and will want to see your performance on shallower/easier dives first (check-out dives). It's a 'wall dive' over an 800m abyssal drop with potentially very strong currents (including occasional down-currents). The ability to dive to 30m is also preferential, as this is where you'll see the most shark action.

If you're not diving Sipidan, then you'll either be on a boat trip to Kapalai, Seaventures Rig or around Mabul Island itself. You can shore dive from Mabul.

The dives around Mabul are awesome - if you like the exotic/small stuff. It's perfect for macro photography. Lots of frogfish, mandarinfish, ghost pipefish, leaf-fish and regular turtles.

After a few dives on Sipidan, I actually preferred the critter hunting/photos on Mabul.

Seaventures (16-18m) is also a great dive. Lots of cool critters - pygmy seahorses, frogfish, crocodile fish, schools of jacks..

Any other information on where to stay in Borneo/trip idea's would be appreciated, I'm really struggling on planning this trip

Give us an idea of your preferences and budget - that'll help with recommendations.

There's a huge volume of resources online. You can start with a search of this board... as there's been a "few" informational threads on the area already

+1 on Andy's comments above.

I was with Borneo Divers last July and although I loved Sipadan (I could have had three full days there with six days total diving but opted for two only) I do prefer critter hunting and taking macro photos. It is probably the only place that anyone could get bored seeing turtles..

My daughter and I did several 90 minute dives from the jetty at Mabul :D

All good information has been stated above.
The only thing I can add is that Celebes Explorer is the only operator that guarantees Sipadan permits.

Are you are flying into Kota Kinabalu from Hong Kong? If so, catch an AirAsia evening flight from KK to Tawau (<$25 right now) and overnight in Tawau, or take a Malaysia Airlines early morning flight (<$35 right now). The dive operator you go with will pick you up in Tawau town or Tawau airport and transfer you to Semporna the morning that your package begins.

When your Sipadan dive adventure is finished, you can travel overland from Semporna to the Kinabatangan River. You can do this by private driver/taxi (expensive but might be worth it if you've got many bags with dive equipment) or public transport in minivans.
There are many resorts that do wildlife safaris on the river. You will see much more than just orangutans!
Not sure what needs you have for a sleeping set up, but there is something for everyone from bare bones to well appointed detached bungalows.
The two main areas for river safari operators are in Kampung Bilit and Sukau. Both villages are on the river. My advice is don't get sold a package that includes Gomantong Caves, Turtle Islands, and Sepilok. You do want a package that includes boat river tours, both day and night, because that is where you'll see the wildlife. The operator/lodge you choose can help arrange and figure out the transport from Semporna to their lodge.

Thank you very much for your advise, this is very much appreciated. After looking at the accomodation options I've narrowed it down to either Kapalai or Borneo Divers and i'm looking to stay 5 days/4 nights.
I am very interested in going to Kinabatangan, is it easy to get there from Mabul?
Many Thanks

I know you said you have narrowed it down already but no one mentioned Scuba Junkies on Mabul and I must say that my wife and I stayed with them on two different trips down to Sipadan and we both really loved it there. Great group of people, nice accommodations, and from what I saw quite a bit cheaper then the other resorts in the area. Just thought to mention you should have a look at if you haven't already. Other than that I think everyone has covered most of the information pertaining to the diving in the area. Enjoy Barracuda Point on Sipadan...one of my favorites!
