Thanks everyone. The reason I posted here was because I had asked a fellow diver at our shop, who's has A LOT of diving experience the same question He told me that a diver should be able to compensate without much effort and that I would need more time in the water to practice. Thanks again, I feel so much better now.

As I think back the guide did something which should have been an indication but I ignored it because I was so excited to dive Silfra. While I was gearing up he was trying to help and he tried to attach my belt buckle without the crotch strap!!! I nicely told him whoa, I got it. When he added the weight, we were submerged at about 15ft so I couldn't see what he was doing.

As a european diving a lot of 12L tanks in single and double configs, man, those fat 12s are useless. I've never met anyone who'd voluntarily prefer one over a regular 12 which is indeed very similar to a HP100.

Someone must buy those dumpy 12l cylinders, or they wouldn’t make them. They’re not on my to buy list.

I had an ex-girlfriend who was short (5'0) and she used them as a twinset. I tried them once and they were horrible. Like wearing a pair of dustbins. On the other hand, before I went CCR I was diving twin 20L steels so who am I to judge?

Yeah, I was not happy when I saw that 12L tank, I spent a few minutes staring in disbelief. Give me my HP100 and I'm good!

They should call it a 12L(OTR) since they are obviously meant for hobbits and dwarves.

Like most types of cylinder, I've owned a dumpy steel 12L. It was OK for single cylinder, recreational diving. Don't recall having great problems with it, but don't think they are good even for smaller people as the centre of gravity is higher in the horizontal position and they roll around a bit.

Dumpy steel 10L were were impossible to trim as a twinset (with normal methods at least). Very head heavy. I've just visited Europe and saw some dumpy steel cylinders in dive shops, someone must like them!

REDEMPTION
Dove in Nova Scotia yesterday, did not have any issues. I feel a lot better now. I assumed and just knew the guide would have placed weights in both trim pockets but NOW I know to discuss in depth weight changes going forward. I was so embarrassed and frustrated. Oh well I have to plan another trip to Silfra for further redemption!!! 😅

I assume you’re talking about single tank diving? And your guide put 5lbs of weight on one side? I don’t get that at all. Why would anyone do something like that, I have no idea. As you learned, it’s probably best to deal with your own weight distribution.

And I’m not clear on what tank you’re talking about, maybe a LP95 slightly overfilled? They are pretty negative. If it’s an AL100, they’re horrible tanks all around. You did say it was filled to 3000; that doesn’t sound like a shorter HP100 to me. But I’m certainly no expert on steel tanks, being a warm water wuss.

Yes single tank. I went to Silfra and was slightly underweighted. My guide had brought extra weights and unknowingly to me placed a 5lbs weight in one trim pouch, why I don't know. The tank I had was a 12L but that is irrelevant, the placement of a 5 pound weight on one side greatly affected my trim. It's a lesson learned to be a better communicator with my guide/DM.
