I'm a Fish!
Hello all,
A few years back I was diving in Tulamben on the Island of Bali and really enjoyed how they had the shore diving set up there, basically all you had to do was walk down the beach to the dive site and the tanks would be there for you. I was wondering if there are any other locations in Indonesia with a similar setup?

Here on Bali, Amed is exactly the same way with some really nice dive sites. I can't speak to the rest of Indonesia though.

Can you explain in more detail the set-up for walk up shore diving in Tulamben and Ahmed...location, prices, etc. I'm a solo certified Divemaster and planning a visit to Bali and interested in independent diving.

Pricing is dependent on the dive center you decide to dive with. As far as how the shore diving works:

We head to the dive site after loading all the gear into the truck Once we arrive, the porters get the gear out of the truck and we setup the equipment. Once ready, we walk into the ocean, put or fins on in waist deep water and off we go. It depends on the dive site but most are done by heading either left or right and coming back to same point of entry for our exit. We then swap out cylinders, do our SI and head back out for dive two (if we went right the first time, we go left the second time)

A generic description and it varies a little from site to site but that is the basics. My dive center does Amed and Tulamben. I did two dives today in Amed and we are doing two in Tulamben tomorrow.

As for solo diving, good luck. Most won't let you do that here due to there being a law that states you have to dive with a local guide (any Balinese DM/Instructor or an expat instructor with a work visa) . Plus, it isn't the best idea when you are diving sites you are not familiar with.

If you are interested, feel free to drop me a message and I can break down our prices for you and will be happy to answer any other questions you may have.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I was aware of the rule against solo diving in Lembeh but hadn't heard about it being in place in Bali too. I thought I read somewhere that in Tulamben there were shops to rent tanks for local shore dives for qualified divers. I can understand wanting to create employment for native dive professionals but a bit of a downer (especially if living there). I will DM you for contact info and pricing

Most of dive resorts in Indonesia offer “house reef” where you can walk & dive from the beach. Just to name a few where I have stayed & dove from the beach:
Mimpi Tulamben
Mimpi Menjangan
Wakatobi Resort
Lembeh Resort
Alor Diver
Misool Eco Resort
Raja4 Diver
Raja Ampat Dive Lodge

Can a qualified diver just rock up to the resort and rent tanks and dive the house reef on their own or do you have to be staying there or sign-up for a series of dives using one of their guides?
