I've been reading reviews and people threads for the last several weeks looking for a dive computer that's right for me. Don't worry this post isn't asking what computers are good for beginners. Ideally I'll be diving twice a year but only one trip will truly be a dive vacation. So while I don't mind spending $500 on a good computer that's trustworthy, I do mind not using it for long periods of time.

So I think the new Garmin Descent G1 sounds like it'd be a good fit. It can replace my aging Fitbit and still go with me on dives. At half the cost of the mk2. Something something 2 birds, 1 stone. While I'd love to buy the mk2 I'm sadly not that rich.

Therefore, my ask to this group is - does that seem like a crazy idea? Does anyone else do this?

There is not much option for a dive computer + smart watch.
All-in-one.

If you’re going to use it as a fitness watch, too, that sounds like it would work for you. My Apple
Watch was something like $350 and you can’t take it diving.

Yeah I've been waiting for the pixel watch forever.... And now that it's about to be released, I'm not sure I'll get it.

One point in the Garmin's favor is that it uses the exact same ZHL-16C decompression model as several other computers (notably Shearwaters) and the Subsurface software. This might not matter to you now, but it does make it a bit more "future proof".

Doesn't seem crazy at all. Especially if you plan to use it to replace your Fitbit as well.

There are less expensive computers out there, but when you factor in the cost of a fitness/smart watch, the Descent G1 makes a lot of sense.

I plan to pick one up myself as a backup to my Perdix, as well as for out of water use. Runs the same algorithm with GFs. On paper it seems to have a lot of capability, so can be used well into the future as your diving progresses.

Same plan as well

That seems like a really expensive purchase for so little diving. I'd just buy a cheap wrist computer or rent it went you go on a trip.
you did read he wants to use it as a everyday smart watch/fitbit?
