This isn't about whether or not to take the course or just jump into AN/DP I have decided to take it. i don't see the harm and I do see some benefit and (I thought) the cost wasn't much at all. However, cost might become an issue.

I contacted a reputable dive shop and asked for a quote for Intro. I was expecting to see what I had seen elsewhere. But they came back with the following quote. Seems over the top by a long shot to charge 1040.00.

They broke it down like this:

Class Intro to Tech Shearwater Dive Computer - $300
Class Intro to Tech Technical Gear Configurations - $300
Class Intro to Tech Doubles Primer - $300
TDI ONLINE ADCADEMICS - $140

For reference, Chatterton charges $750 and most other places charge in the 250-400 range for Intro to Tech (TDI). What am I missing that justifies that?

Thanks.

lolz. Go take fundies and have money to spare, or find an appropriate instructor with modern philosophies and be done with it.

The classes will be the least expensive aspect of tec. While 1k is a bit high, you need to compare the instructor and what you will be getting out of this more expensive class that others may not offer. If the more expensive class will provide a better instructor and/or more focus on required skills, it may be worth the extra cost. Some classes will provide you with some equipment while others will expect you to have your own. That is something else that may be considered in this price. Many folks have a desire to get into tec but when they get a full realization of just how expensive it can be, they may decide it's just not for them.

I agree with the other folks. That's nuts, find another instructor.

Here's an idea, that diveshop is not really "reputable", they simply cater to people who don't know better because they know that these people will listen to and respect whatever they say because they are "tEchH diVErss" and instructors.

Class Intro to Tech Shearwater Dive Computer - $300
Class Intro to Tech Technical Gear Configurations - $300
Class Intro to Tech Doubles Primer - $300

What do these even mean?
They seriously going to charge you 300 bucks to teach you how a Shearwater works, something that you can learn pretty well simply by flipping through the manual in less than half an hour?

300 bucks to show and explain to you how the technical gear configuration works?
We spent about 1,5-2 hours on this part during fundies, and it was mostly because my buddy had zero experience with DIR configuration.
I'd be happy to pay 300/day of training during a tech class with a good instructor because I know that they can effectively fit a lot of stuff into that day.
Someone who needs an entire day to go over the technical gear configuration is someone I would stay well away from in regards to training.

Find another instructor/shop for your class, these people are pulling tf outta your leg.

Warning, wanting to charge you $300 to learn how to use a Shearwater isn't right. Read the manual, move the setting from recreational to tech, I just taught you the class and I'll only charge you half price. For intro to tech, not any of the deco classes just intro, there is really nothing to teach.

As others stated, find another instructor. If they are plucking $100 bills out of you this fast on the intro class I can't wait to see what they start pulling when you take real classes.

I wasn't planning on just accepting this, but being overly cautious, I thought I'd ask.

If he has time, I will probably just do it with John Chatterton. Intro/AN/DP is only a bit more expensive with him.
