I think people forget what market of divers Shearwater computers were originally intended for and what the Perdix computer really is. Pre the Teric coming out and Shearwater becoming a mainstream popular brand your average recreational diver had no clue that Shearwater computers even existed but now everyone and there mom has one if not two for there 45min 30m max NDL dive 20 times a year on holiday. So now comes all the request for all the bells and whistles, literally. When Shearwater computer were originally marketed for a very select niche market of technical divers.

Shearwater was making no frills, robust, easy 2 button, mixed gas technical decompression dive computers that met the demands for the advanced technical diver. Remember the Perdix came out in 2015'ish (if my memory is correct, I remember when they came out and I HAD to have one) so my point is its not a new computer and does not have any of the fancy features like a Garmin that includes alarms. The Perdix was just a slimed down version of the Petrel which was just and updated version of the Predator.

Basically not much has changed. The Perdix is simply a glorified Predator which is 15+ year old technology that works well and everyone knows and is familiar with. This follows the KISS rule. So that is why it does not have alarms. Divers that truly use Shearwater computers to there full potential I think would put audible alarms pretty low on the priority list of things to upgrade.

I have been diving rebreathers with hardwired Shearwaters for a while now and have never felt the need for auditable alarms nor would I want them. Plus that is just one more electrical item that can fail and also is one more item that will increase the price on the computer.

If you truly feel like you need alarms then great buy something else other than a Shearwater its that simple. Sunnto makes all kinds of computer that make noise the entire dive if that your thing.

Plenty of upgrades we would all like, but this one is kinda odd, since perdix pretty much stands out of the crowd on this point…

Perdix is a modern computer based on modern tech, very different from the predator and quite different from the petrel in term of circuit. Old is good but evolution is better. I do get that it was not a must have even 10 years ago, but today I think it is.

For my self, even though I never had the case, a clear alarm in true life threatening situations detected by the computer would seem normal.

But then again; if someone does not want any alarm : this stuff should have customization built in.

As for the cost, nipping device is dirt cheap, would not expect a significant difference.

The Perdix was originally developed for tech divers, who do not need the babysitting and hand holding of recreational divers with audible beeps and vibrations. That kind of stuff is unwanted crap for tech divers.

If you need beeps and vibrations to remind you to check your computer, that’s the intended audience of the Peregrine

For me the use case would be for significant deviations. Like if my ppo2 turns at 2, I would like my computer to immediately alert me in every possible way. Would even mind to have the screen turning stroboscopic 🤣
hopefully that would wake me up from what ever issue I m having and save a life

By the time you get to 2, CNS is at 300% and your life is ended so no need for an alarm lol just kidding
Here's my Perdix giving me an alert to NDL :)

Good training/constant training and real world problem solving skills is what will save your life underwater not a computer beeping at you. This is what a true good diver is, its not about how good your trim is but its about if you can recognize and solve problems. Especially when it comes to deep rebreather diving. I have been trained and taught that it is actually underwater survival. Anyone to dive down to 180m and back up but not anyone can solve problems on the fly at 180m.

Having a Shearwater Perdix with an beeping alarm would mean Shearwater would need to release a new model. I am guessing this is not small low cost task.

I do dive quite a bit tech; my point is that even for amazing_tech_diver_who_dive_to_120meter_for_breakfast an alert has its use case. Certainly not to tell me that I m reaching ndl or what not, but certainly for what I would classify life threatening. The example of the ppo2 at 2 is a good one : very survivable if corrected very quickly, very much deadly if you wait the additional 30s that you took to check your computer because you were task loaded.

Generally speaking, more security is always welcome IMO.

I consider myself a good driver. I respect speed limits and I look in the mirror every 10 seconds. I’m still wearing a seat belt.

Hello all I do would like to have a configurable alert system, so that if I ever deviate significantly from my dive parameters, something wakes me up from my narcosis or my task load.

No computer can tell if you are narced or what your task load is. If you need one to tell you that you have already failed hehehe
Sometimes on my dives I will close my eyes. Why you ask? I want to see if I can feel a change in pressure from either descending or ascending or can I maintain my depth with my eyes closed. It's actually really not easy to do. Also it's good to close your eyes and just listen to the calls from fish and other critters making chirping noises and what not.

Then I get divers telling the DM or instructors I was sleeping on the dive. They are like yeah he does that he takes naps from time to time lol.

We will repeat again for you: Tech divers don’t want the alarms. If your situational awareness is so poor that you need alarms to remind you to check your computer, perhaps you shouldn’t be tech diving.

There is perhaps limited demand for a haptic alarm for PPO2 for CCR divers, but Shearwater hasn’t felt the need to add such to the Petrel 2.

Hello Marie,

Without being agressive, I do disagree. I’m diving tech and I would like an alert system. Maybe I’m standing alone in the desert, maybe I’m not. In any case my voice is heard.😊

I do not think that you can really use my opinion to make judgment call on my abilities to dive but that’s up to you…

I do 100% agree on haptic rather than audio though

I would like an alert system.
and alarm system you shall have.

For a couple hundred bucks you and the entire dive site can enjoy beep... beep... beep... beep... beep... beep... beep... beep... beep... beep... for however long your dive is and in my case some of my dives are over 6hr. at this point I would brake the thing.
