If I were to say $300, what would you think?

Or I could do the same dive on the rebreather for about $30 in gas.
I never took a trimix class until I was a year into owning a rebreather. The only open circuit trimix I dived was bailout for class.

Stuff like this, getting on a boat expecting to do a 200' dive. Get to the site, conditions are not good. Off to another site, then another. Finally find acceptable conditions on a 130' site. Do you dive the $300 in gas? Sit it out and enjoy the boat ride? Rebreather, you just take the dive and not care you are using $30 in Helium that you don't need.

But what about the start up costs for buying a rebreather and the training required to be able to do the depth you want? What about maintenance and the safety factor?

Don’t buy a rebreather instead of a regulator.
if i ever do, it will be maybe 15-18 years in the future, not anytime soon.

They are high. But there are times where it does make sense. Just do a trip to Truk. Price the cost of Helium to do the deep dives OC. A week+ trip and the Helium bill alone could pay for the CCR. On my last trip to Truk my total gas bill, O2 + He, was half that of the guy that dove OC with just Nitrox. O2 is cheap, but when you buy that much of it, it still adds up.

For the average diver, saying a rebreather is going to save you money over open circuit, is like using the cost if diving off a dive boat to justify buying a new boat.
Sounds a bit like buying a compressor,,,
A few people can save money, most don't,, But sure is convenient

What about the safety factor?
Yes, they are safe. Take a class on one and you can learn there is plenty of safety in a rebreather. They only appear unsafe if you don't know them or only know a little bit about them.

uh oh, how much could i expect to pay for 2 HP100s filled with trimix?

It depends on your geographic location. In California, expect to pay $2.00cft. I believe they pay the same near the Great Lakes region. Pesonally, I have a spare tank. I have my shop transfill the trimix into this spare tank while they perform yearly service on the tank and the manifold.
