Going to Cozumel for 8 days of diving and want to make sure that if there is a problem with my "new to me eBay Teric" that I am not missing any dives. The Teric looks mint / new but... I also have a new shearwater transmitter to pair to it, and I have had various issues with other first time dives with new gear. I will have an analog SPG. Mostly NDL but I will be using Nitrox on some dive days.

What would you suggest as a backup for the $300 range? Used or otherwise?

My primary is a Perdix and my back up is a Deep6 Excursion. The algorithms match but I dont use custom GF's. That should shortly be a non issue if you do, as a firmware update is reported to be coming from Deep6 that may allow that. It is a little more than the $300 price new.

I ended up just getting another Teric but the deep 6 is a decent choice, another way to look at it, you can get a $300 discount on another Teric by not buying something else first.

Only challenge is finding something that has the same algorithms as the Teric, so probably something else from Shearwater.

I use an Aqualung i770r with an i300 console backup, doesn’t look like Shearwater has an inexpensive option

You will be hard pressed to find a computer running Buhlmann for $300. The closest you will come is probably the Deep 6 Excursion for $350. It currently runs near the same 3 presets as your Teric. It will be a more capable computer when the upgrade comes out.

I assume you will be diving rec mode with one of the presets, have you decided which? You don't want your backup being more conservative than your primary. For example, an Oceanic BUD ($200), running DSAT, would run similarly to a GF high of 95

Edit: I see a couple of posts while I was typing. All the Aqua Lung computers except for the i330R run PZ+, reasonably close to a GF high of 85. The i330R ($359) runs Buhlmann with 3 presets, GF high of 90, 85, and 70. Just to remind you, your Teric presets are 45/95, 40/85, 35/75, the second number is the GF high, applicable to no stop dives.

How many of you all dive with a backup?

I do and have for years. Started when I first started tech diving a decade ago and still do to this day. I go through alot to get out on a boat to dive, I would be royally pissed off to have a dead computer cost me planned dives. I NEVER dive without two computers. I dive a Perdix AI and a Peregrine. Both are configured identically from an algorithm perspective.

as MaxE mentioned, i have a deep 6 excursion as a backup as well. it's easy to use, good matching algorithm, and good idle battery life which is nice for a backup.
looks like the price has gone up though? not sure i'd get another one at the current price.
