I have on two separate occasions had the experience of making videos with GoPro Hero 8 on trips, coming back home, and putting the SD card into a computer to view the videos. The videos would view at first, but then for some reason, a problem occurred. I would get the message that the SD card needed to be re-formatted. I called the SansDisc company and talked with them about it. On both occasions they sent replacement cards to me, but that doesn't help with the lost videos. They had no explanation for why this might have happened. Now I've got another trip coming up. I'll take a different brand of SD cards this time and am planning to use several different cards so that hopefully at least some of them won't fail. But I have no idea what if anything I might have done or failed to do that caused this problem. Any ideas?

I have had SD cards fail. Just lost one on my phone. Files were getting to the point they were there but would not open.
As far as having a file that works a time or two then fails, don't run the files directly off the card. Get an external hard drive and the first thing you do is copy (not move) the files to the backup hard drive.
My big trips I use multiple SD cards, typically one per day. If I loose a card, I lost a day not the whole trip. Those get copied to an external hard drive. That external drive is my working copy. The few bits I really like will actually get a 3rd home on the computer.

Can you view the video on the GoPro? Did you use the same computer both times? Have you had this problem with SD cards that weren't used in your GoPro?
No, both the GoPro and the computer said that the card had an error and needed to be reformatted. I did use the same computer both times. Only computer I have. Not counting the one in phones, I've never used an SD card other than in my GoPro. But it happened on my first GoPro 8 and again on a replacement GoPro, so I don't believe the fault is in the camera. I suspect it's something I'm doing wrong, though I have no idea what.

Sadly this is somewhat of a common problem with SD cards and alot of times SD cards are fake. This is why most high end DSLR's have 2 card slots for redundancy due to card failures
With SD cards generally you get what you pay for. The more expensive ones are seem to be a lot more reliable. I have had best luck with Samsung Pro + and Evo cards never had a failure yet. Next would be Sandisk Extreme Pro cards. However I have had 2 failures with some of the lower end Sandisk so I have drifted away from them but the Extreme Pro cards seem to still be very reliable.
Really the only thing you can do is try another higher end card and hope you have better luck.

I'm not very familiar with GoPros, but does your GoPro offer the option to reformat the SD card in the camera?
It is not unusual for an SD card to need to be formatted in the camera that it will record in to get the best results. (At least with DSLRs & Mirrorless cameras.)
If you can format the card in your GoPro, try it & see if it works. (It might not, I am just offering a suggestion.)

No experience with newer GoPros but with several cameras over the years (DSLR's, Paralenz, older GoPro's etc) and different brands of cards I've found card problems arise when I use a computer to format the cards. Now I always format within the camera in question and format often... I've got cards with years of use now.
As a backup system on trips I use WD's "My Passport Wireless SSD". Pop the card in and it's automatically copied to the drive. You can then access the files from any phone/laptop via the integrated WIFI.
