Has anyone heard of a shop limiting Discover Diving students to dives on that day only? And requiring the class to be repeated for each day they dive? It has been my experience that resort class divers can dive all that week, but I suspect we're being corralled into having our friends go full Open Water or the new "certified diver" class. Funny thing is, this shop had always allowed resort class divers to dive all week, but they have new owners.

That's a dangerous approach. Two died on a recent resort dive in Spain recently. Good that they're stopping that.

You can do continuous discover diving classes with instruction, you can get the equivalent of scuba divers certification where you take the class and training dives once and then can dive but always with an instructor without repeating the instruction part, or you can take open water certification which is twice as long as scuba diver certification, but then can dive independently without having to repeat the instruction part. Maybe the resort was certifying to the level of scuba diver and is no longer doing so.

Scuba Diver | PADI

This is one example of such training.

I know that what you experienced in the past does happen in some cases (I saw it once), but that practice is not mentioned in the PADI standards. Maybe it is mentioned in the standards for other agencies, but I don't know of any.

Yes, I had already checked the PADI website, and while it says Discover Diving students can "dive with an instructor" it doesn't mention whether those dives are limited to that day. Our friends intend on diving on two days, two days apart. I suppose they can repeat the same class 48 hours later if the shop requires it (in fact, they'll have no choice). I wondered whether this was a new approach now that there is a sort of "permanent resort diver" through the new "certified scuba diver" classification. They could do that new class but it's more expensive than taking the same resort class twice, although the new class would allow them to dive in the future provided they are with an instructor or DM (and when aren't you with a DM?)

You're talking about them diving again; is there a reason they don't want to get certified? They can do the bulk of the cert process at home (presumably) before they go to the resort, then they are completing their cert process on dives at the resort, then they are good to go as certified OW divers. It sounds like that was considered and discarded?

They were last minute additions to a trip in 2 weeks. It was suggested as an option but they doubted they could complete it in time.

Not arguing since I don't know your friends' schedules, but it's very possible to do the PADI OW course in under two weeks. I did mine in just over a week - 8 days IIRC. I was still working then, so didn't have as much free time as I do now.

Sounds like the new owners are making a smart decision in regards to safety. I did a Discovery course several years ago. It was not very in-depth and would have been a pretty big liability to let us dive again a couple of days later without reiterating the information. (I think, at most, the above water instruction was less than 30 minutes.) Plus, I don't think the Discovery class lets divers go very deep....certainly not to the OW 60 ft depth limit recommendation. From what I recall, which could have changed, we weren't supposed to go deeper than 20 ft. Basically, the discovery dive(s) keep you in the safety stop zone. They are just meant to entice people to consider getting certified.

They can do the study part On-line now. Takes about 6 -8 hours.
In Cozumel They then do Pool work (skills) one day than 2 days of diving with instructor (4 dives). They are then OW certified for life.

Could even be faster than that depending on where they go. My OW course was a total of 2 days. One morning in the pool, diving that afternoon, and diving the next morning.
