It is easier to believe someone else paid than to believe PADI gave you a card for free. :)
PADI was not that greedy in the 90s.
No need to buy any manuals then. Did not spend a cent on manual for 8 courses.
Different story now: OW, AOW, 5 specialities and rescue!

So what source of funds did PADI use to create the materials that you used? Donations?

I did not pay for the MSD card in 1997. Period.
The manuals were FREE in the 90s. Period. Didn't you know that?
How PADI did it ? Do I care!
Have you got the answers?

You may not have paid for your manuals, but I certainly did. The manuals were not included in the cost of the class.

I believe it was an option then but no more since early 2000 or late 90s.

Pretty sure our PADI manuals in 1990 were not free. Possibly included with class, but that’s not the same as free. IIRC doing the quiz things in the book and tearing them out to turn in was a thing around then, ensuring everybody had to buy a book somehow.

Another thing I’m remembering was that the manual thing was different in some places where it was apparently difficult to always get them. I heard used/loaned/shared manuals were tolerated by PADI in some countries.

No body has ever suggested that the manual was FREE.
That was an option back in those good days when the dive operator could loan them out for FREE.
I never had to buy any manuals in the 90s. It seems some people just could not accept this part of PADI's history!!!!!!

It was the case in Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand in the 90s and I have seen some really old and worn one in PNG. Not everywhere is as cosy as USA.

Um, you said they were free.

Well, someone suggested that the manuals were free. Someone, somewhere.....

In any case, I became an instructor in 1995. Manuals weren't free even then. There was some sharing allowed, and more was put up with, but PADI was already trying to crack down on shared manuals and photocopied Knowledge Reviews.
