The "Let's go up/Go up" signal in some cultures, Iran, means "F' you" (flipping somebody the bird). It could get you killed there :)

It is utterly pathetic. To allow a perfectly innocent diving signal to be highjacked by f4ckwits to then be offensive to other f4ckwits is beyond ridiculous.

I despair of the radical few % on either side of the spectrum that seem to be allowed to dictate how the rest of us should go about our normal, tolerant lives.

Sorry for the rant, I'm just a bit sick of it.
Agree. I think someone was probably ranting about stuff like this decades ago......

Come on guys, at least read the article before you get all offended - seems even the OP didn't bother reading it. Or, more likely, OP is trolling and a lot on here seem to have forgotten their knife and gotten caught on the hook and line!

Even the Anti-Defamation League, the organisation this article is about who list it as a hate symbol, are quoted on there saying that context is important and they're not complaining about people using it in its normal situation - and they definitely wouldn't care about divers using it. It's just recognising that there are some who are now deliberately using it for something else - which is a fact.

No one is going to care what symbols you use underwater. Do as you like.

However, the OK symbol is the worst symbol to use as a diver. If someone signs ok, usually the other person will respond back with an ok. If they dont understand, they give you the ok. They are having trouble, they give you the ok. Not ok, they give you back the ok.

Good diving communications should be precise and repeated back to you for confirmation.

This is a pure troll.

It's two years old. And there's nothing in the article about anyone being offended. Someone took the gesture being added to the Anti-Defamation League's database of hate symbols as a chance to throw up a clickbait headline for the easily gulled.

For anyone interested, the hate symbol database - Hate on Display™ Hate Symbols Database - is meant to help law enforcement, security personnel and researchers better understand and identify hate groups in order to better protect the public. It's not a list of what you can or can't say.
