Suunto EON collection software updates

Suunto EON Steel software update 2.5

Released 18 January 2021

Suunto EON Steel grows with new features and improvements.

Updated dive algorithm
The decompression algorithm Suunto Fused™ RGBM 2, is now available for Suunto EON Steel. The Suunto Fused™ RGBM 2 combines and improves widely respected Suunto RGBM (Reduced Gradient Bubble Model) and Suunto Fused™ RGBM decompression models developed by Suunto together with Dr. Bruce Wienke. The Suunto Fused™ RGBM 2 has been developed to give divers various diving opportunities and especially support deep air dives by giving better optimized total dive time.

Suunto Fused™ RGBM 2 highlights:

  • Optimized ascent times on deep air decompression dives
  • Enhanced dive times for repetitive dives
  • For decompression diving there is an option to select between a stepped ascent profile (3 meter / 10 feet steps stops) or continuous ascent profile
  • Further developed no-fly time calculation
  • 3-meter safety stop after long decompression stops removed
  • EON Steel with Fused™ RGBM 2 supports open-circuit and closed-circuit diving.

Mobile connectivity with Suunto app

  • Suunto app works as a digital logbook for your dives. Transfer your dive logs easily over Bluetooth to your mobile after diving.
  • In Suunto app you can relive, and share your diving adventures, build an all-inclusive dive history by enriching your dive logs with photos, comments and dive location. Review and analyze all your dive data including dive time, maximum depth, device settings, gas consumption (when using Suunto Tank POD).
  • The Suunto community is a vibrant and diverse group, sharing inspiring stories and experiences every day. Social sharing on Suunto app is personal - select what you want to share and to whom.
  • Suunto app can also track your other sports and daily activity with a compatible Suunto sports watch.

Logbook improvement

  • New features have been added to the dive log viewer in the dive computer to enhance usability and enrich the available dive info.
  • The improved and enriched summary page will help you analyze your dive by showing average depth of dive, CNS and OTU levels as well as your personal dive settings.
  • If using Suunto Tank POD you can also follow the development of your gas consumption and SAC rate.

New easy way to keep your dive computer up to date

  • Software updates will hereby be available via SuuntoLink. SuuntoLink is a desktop software available for OS and Windows that keeps your device software up to date.
  • The latest software will also be available to download in DM5.

Added language

  • Suunto EON Steel is now also available in traditional Chinese.

Maintenance improvements

  • This release also includes enhancements to improve device performance and usability.

Seems to be mostly the same as last year's update for the Core - with no hint of a new option for the Buhlmann algorithm - which was promised a few years ago.

That said - still love my Eon Core.

The first update in 3 years... From my point of view an absolute disappointment.

You can get Buhlman algo apparently for the Eon Steel, don’t know why they charge for it though for older computers.

How to get the Bühlmann algorithm to your EON Steel?

I've just spoken to my man

The charge covers a full inspect and general service most Eon's will not have been back to a dealer for service since they were brought - I'll bet my tow are quite skanky inside since they're 5 years old

Mine are going away for the Buhlmann upgrade only out of curiosity - I use Buhlmann on my Perdix and not that fussed about it. It's nothing special and does nothing I can't do on my current Eon (cue S/W fanboi flames)

With the exception of maybe being able to see two gas contents at teh same time for SM (doesn't bother me as I'm happy with SPG on my SM) there is nothing wrong with the Eon and its operation. In all my diving I've never found it wanting

Maybe CCR peeps might want something extra but I was under the impression they use different controllers etc

It is. I'm led to believe there's some code under the cover to prepare it for buhlmann and the release and testing got put back by Covid as well as getting the D5 to market

My guess is they have either found it would not fit or making it fit takes a rework of the boot and firmware update process that takes attaching wires to the board. That will cost them. Since they announced this feature a while ago they owe it to people who have bought it since.

I don't expect anything positive or of value from Suunto at all.
For me, this TC was the last Suunto. Next time I will buy directly a Shearwater.... They care about their customers and are continuously expanding the product with new features.

A mode for sidemount diving would have been something I would have been very happy about. But what I find even more disappointing is that as an early adopter I have to pay 80€ for a Buhlmann algorithm because my dive computer is older than 2 years. I mean what have the engineers at suunto made the last few years? A further development of the range of functions it can not have been, because the new "features" can be compared with those of the Eon Core.

I do run a Perdix as well as my Eon Steel, like you I was an early adopter. My two were the first in my region

SM support is a nice to have, I haven’t got transmitters in my Perdix AI because I didn’t feel the need

I’ve got +1000 dives on my Eon and approx 500 on the Perdix, so I’m familiar with both and run deco on them both.

Bulhmann 45/95 and P-2 on the Eon run identically, even after 40 repetitive dives. The SW (apart from SM gas support on transmitters) does nothing more than the Eon, it’s screen isn’t as good either and it’s menu 2 button operation not as nice as the Eon

Buhlmann was never conceived for the steel, I’m still waiting for the full details of the upgrade process from my pet tech. I’m only putting it onto have it, I have no need for it since my diving of less than 20min deco doesn’t need it

Yes I’d like some firmware changes to suit me, but in reality I don’t think the computer needs any real improvement

I’m surprised given your location your not using OSTC unless you desperately want AI

I agree with you that the software on the Eon steel is very stable, but I just think that you can expect more in this price segment.

Hmm I know the computers but in German forums is often reported about spontaneously going out dive computers and much too short battery life. Which is why I decided against this computer. Maybe this is no longer up to date, but when you hear many people talking about good customer service, it makes you a little suspicious...
