One important comment about "any old regulator will do"...

I'm an Atomic fanboi. But I don't put their seconds on my pony. They're a seat saver second. So if you pressurize, then shut off the tank to prevent accidental emergency gas loss, then the purge button gets banged, the valve is now open.
As you descend, you will force water into your first stage. No big deal for a piston if you suddenly need the gas, but if you happen to be mixing an Atomic second in with an old diaphragm first, it may lock up. In any case, you now have to service the first stage to prevent internal salt water corrosion.

After reading several threads on pony tanks, I sure would like to hear what regulator (1st & 2nd stage) you would recommend for alternative air tanks (including pony bottles, stage tanks, etc.)..

I just ordered a 30cf tank, so I’m now in the market for a alternative air regulator. I’m tempted to stick with either ScubaPro or Deep 6 regulators, as that’s what I have now, but wondering if there any special considerations worth considering for alternative air regulators.

How are you intending to rig your new 30?
Does your bc have sturdy attachment points?
Will in be going on all dives to provide self reliance?
If yes, then you only need a first stage for the short hose and second stage that you already have.
Move it to the new 1st, add an SPG on a short hose and wear that reg. on a necklace for your alternate.
Now you breathe your main tank using the longer hose, and donate that reg. in an oog emergency and you switch to the pony.
No need for 3 second stages on a rec. dive. This is how I do it and in no way should be considered professional instruction.

Cheers!

@shurite7 & others: Thanks for your experienced recommendations..... I reconsidered and changed my tank size order from 30cf to 40cf. Sounds like a good move. Now all I need to figure out is a regulator and rigging/desired hose routing.... should be fun.

@Doctor Rig, you are welcome. Keep the set up simple and streamlined. ALSO - practice with it - more than couple of times. I’ve seen many people buy a pony set up and never practice with it; they expect everything to work out when the s hits the fan. Practice until it is second nature. Good luck.

Just imagine if you'd stuck to your guns, where the 30 is perfect for mounting out of the way
instead of completely in the way like the would bees could bees wanna bees slingers mount.

Just have a check of this guy with a little longer but slimmer steel tank than an aluminium30

He's swimming away from a cacophonous collection of slung clunkers

And also fully dressed there ain't no need for any weight compensation

Of course when you're sharking you can't hug a shark if you're a slinger

and whatever regs you have for the fashion extravaganza that is diving

with as few pipes and stuff as possible if you decide to make it possible

You'll find most of us have a regulator we've grown to love. I'm an Aqua Lung Legend guy. Other regulators are equally awesome I'm sure. My only recommendation is to mirror @tbone1004. Go with the same reg that you use on your back gas. Keep it simple. This allows swapping regs as necessary and eases maintenance. I've gone to doing this and am glad I did. I use AL Legends on both back gas and on my pony.
