Let me try to explain. These A$1,215 your Perdix worths is close to my family's monthly income (2 adults 2 kids) which BTW probably will get even less in the coming months (due to covid).
Sorry, as above, my comment wasn't directed at you but some of the other comments as well as what I frequently see on Scubaboard (and elsewhere).

And yes, diving is a very expensive hobby and the costs keep coming (air fills, gear servicing, travel, etc.).

anyone know how to upgrade my VR3s to cell readers

I'm on my second or third paralenz it's always breaking
God forbid buying a new one

Yep a thousand bucks for a computer and a hundred bucks for a regulator is how I like it
Trouble is with a good one you may be tempted to turn your brain off
My Perdix and Petrel EXT should go the distance

And remember your most important piece of gear

recently they sold right to this computer to another company
McLean Extreme McLean Extreme 5 dive computer which made fork for their firmware and created new one.

Hello Rygar,

I'm the founder of McLean, have been a software engineer specialised in numerical simulations and data visualisation for thirty years and a technical diver for almost as long.

The Extrême really is a very different machine to the DiveComputer.eu, and the firmware distinctly not a fork: the ZHL16+GF kernel was written about seven years ago and the rest of the firmware in continuous development and test for around five.

In its current, final, incarnation, the Extrême has been in all sorts of dive environments and configurations by all sorts of divers for around a year, and has never once let anybody down. Right now we're in the process of moving from away from prerelase to release but, as for everything else related to the Extrême, we're making changes incrementally and with considerable care so it may be a little while before you see any huge advertising campaign.

David.

Interesting info. I wonder, would it be possible to load McLean's firmware to divecomputer.eu devices ???
That is assuming of course that McLean proves to have better software engineers AND that it supports older units.

Hello Stepfen,

It is not possible to install Extrême firmware on a DiveComputer.eu; attempting to do so will generally brick your machine and will certainly void any warranty you may have.

In some cases we may be able to modify a DiveComputer.eu to allow installation, although this will inevitably include a return to the factory. Anybody who's interested in this can contact us directly from the website.

David.

Hi, David, thank you a lot for full info about your product. I'm really suprised that my post brought your attention
Could you explain what mean sentence by Piotr Redkiewicz (producer/developer of divecomputer.eu):
"This is a different product (multilingual) based on our latest architecture but you can switch software as long as it is "NXP" version"

I found also another info from Redkiewicz which confirm what you said:
"Based on our hardware platform, after a few month of analysis we shared the platform for an alternative project designed by David Carron working in McLean Extreme company. McLean Extreme software is a separate parallel project based on our hardware and also on our experiences in embedded software shared with David (main code of the software). We believe that extraordinary knowledge of David in embedded software and also theory of decompression and also diving medicine can create parallel software which will suit many divers in the world. Therefore we strongly support David's work at McLean Extreme company."

Rygar,

I'm not sure about the exact phrasing, but I take it to mean that the Extrême firmware may be installable with minimal or no intervention to the hardware. However, I would strongly recommend against attempting this as it will almost certainly brick your machine and definitely void any warranty.

Seriously, this is life support equipment we're talking about here.

David.

I wish you all the best. I hope your product will be much better than divecomputer.eu :thumb:

Ah cool, a person that is not an complete idiot getting involved with a dive computer.
David has been talking about (and showing) his software on TDF for years and built a decent looking prototype that he has been diving. Great news that it is turning into a product.

We got some great usability feedback from people on TDF, and the offer of a reduced price for TDF users still stands

... If you have never built a device of this class you can have no clue as to the hidden complications.

True words.
Dive computers are a lot more complex than it appears on the um... "surface". Even engineers highly experienced in consumer type products will fail to appreciate the firmware complexity.
