Don’t know if it’s really the right section, but I am thinking of buying a family car for weekend trips and week long trips:
- I’d be mostly carrying only 1 kit for my self but I may occasionally carry my buddy kit
- we would be up to 3 adults and 1 children

At the moment I am leaning towards two options:
  • Skoda Octavia, it has a massive boot size (600+l), I think this car has very good value compared to its specs. It has really good mileage per gallon
  • Volvo XC60, not so good on boot size (480l) but it looks more comfortable

Anyone here has some personal recommendations of cars they use for family scuba trips ?

I was about to tell you my Toyota sequoia is the best for trips - 8 tanks 4 sets of gear, but I don't think that car would fit on London streets

I've packed in a Passat Sedan 6 15l steel tanks and 3 sets for gear and 3 people with clothes for an extended weekend.
Combined with a 5l/100km fuel consumtions and a 600l trunk it's pretty awesome for weekend trips.
If you go for the all road version, I think you're good for any kind on activity, not just diving.

Also, my vote goes to skoda, and depending on the access might wanna look at a Octavia Scout.

Yea I would have loved to buy a 2020 Octavia Scout but it looks like there will be no scout in the 2020 Octavia range as Skoda is marketing instead their small SUVs.

I am usually only driving to piers and on normal roads so I’ll probably be ok for access.

Any ford or Chevy truck with an extended cab will do.

Then a regular Octavia def. You don't even need the estate version. And save up 2k on the difference, and have lower MPG.

And I think you need to add a disclaimer to the initial post, that you need an euro friendly car. :D

I did a weight estimate for the whole, gear weight, people weight, supplies such as water, and then looked up what my car’s load carrying capacity was and realized I would bend the axle if I tried making it into a Scuba-mobile. My Dad actually bent the axle of his car transporting bricks in the trunk, so I’ve learned from him, a car is not a truck.

That’s a good point: it looks like a Skoda Octavia could carry my family +300+kgs so we should be ok

Take into consideration that a whole set of scuba gear + 2 steel 15l tanks are still lighter than adding an additional passanger to the back seat.

Just saying.

Love this post:heart:, for the differences between the UK and USA.

In the USA Petrol (Gasoline), is basically free in comparison to UK prices. In addition, we pay an annual road Tax, the bigger the vehicle, the bigger the tax.
Some parts of the country, manoeuvring a pickup down a road is extremely difficult due to the narrow roads. Parking can also be a challenge.
